That doesn't even make any sense. How was indy/alternative trying to be pop-like? It was trying to be the antithesis of pop. That was just a dumb comment.

Popular music in every generation is playing to the lowest common denominator. You have to find the bands that are doing their own thing. It was true then and it is now.

The mop the floor line was quoting an old timer. A joke. Thus the italics.

Pop music still existed in the 90's outside the bands I referenced all with the sole purpose of being famous regardless of how dumb the music was. While there are always copy cat artists of successful musicians, bands like Metallica, Nirvana et al weren't produced by a talent company with the sole purpose of making money for said company. And it was actually the fact that alternative music got so good that it also crossed into the top 40 pop side that led to Cobain committing suicide. That and drugs of course, but he didn't want the fame or like it. For you younger folk, alternative actually wasn't popular at one time.

The 90's alternative scene wasn't driven by pop culture. In many ways, it started driving pop culture and that distinction is important to grasp.

I understand that it was a joke but it was said about many alt artists in the 90s. Their vocal ability as well as musicality were questioned. We all know it was a BS way to ignore and denigrate that generations talent. But you're kind of doing it now.

I dont think you tried that hard if you don't think there are plenty of good artists out right now.

Also of note, a lot of the great indie bands/rockers from the 90s are still putting out quality work (Dinosaur Jr, the Pixies, Wilco, Stephen Malkmus and Spoon among others).
