From the pic, it seems like a larger than normal gap between actual field and the newly built seating. Is that correct or is it just the way the picture appears?

Correct; they placed the new stands to accommodate a regulation soccer field. IIRC an NCAA soccer field must be between 70-75 yards wide whereas an NCAA football field must be something around 53-1/3 yards wide.

Are they going to tear down those seats behind the new part? It would look kind of stupid to keep them.
