Georgia State's plan for Turner Field challenged - Georgia_Power_Company - 07-23-2015 07:35 PM

It looks like GSU has some competition for the Turner Field site. The Mayor and Governor seem to prefer the GSU plan but these casino companies are sure to pure a lot of money into the Atlanta economy.

Big $$$$ entering the picture.

Can the Governor and Mayor turn away hundreds of millions of revenue dollars and thousands of jobs to keep a football stadium that only a few thousand people 6 times a year attend?

Short answer: Yes.

Less-short answer: Aside from the Georgia State community, there will be plenty of people in metro-Atlanta and around the state who will take Georgia State's side of this, over/against the casino developers. Plus, there are other places where the casino could be located (assuming that a political consensus in favor of building a casino in the first place actually exists).

Also, leaders with Georgia State and the City of Atlanta envision the Turner Field property to be used for more -- a lot more -- than just a football stadium.

Nobody is staking their political career on putting a casino complex in the middle of 5 or 6 low income, disadvantaged neighborhoods. You think GSU has an uphill battle? Go for it MGM. LOL.

Would not be shocked at all if the mayor "leaked" this so the neighborhood groups would see what the alternative is.

Let's not aim to be Detroit here.

Some casino people tried to get underground Atlanta previously IIRC. Don't think ideas like this have panned out before.

As plausible as your comment on the leak sounds, and as much as I doubt Deal or Reed (or the Bible thumper crowd) would allow a casino in downtown Atlanta, I doubt just as much that those poorer neighborhood groups aren't the real targets of the casinos after all. Go into any convenience store on Friday evening and see who is buying lotto tickets...it isn't the guy in the Mercedes or BMW. I'm guessing that there are loads of studies out there showing that the lower income folk are the biggest participants in all forms of gambling - casinos, horses, etc. - and can least afford it.

Would be a better plan if the state of GA wasn't so backwards honestly. We're talking 3,000 jobs, millions pumped into the economy vs what, a couple dorms and a stadium that'll hardly ever draw any revenue?

Have you ever been in a casino neighborhood? And it's not just a stadium and a couple of dorms. The project will transform the area. A casino will not. Would actually make a bad situation worse.

The neighborhood groups have a laundry list of items they want to see and it pretty much matches our plan and yet they are still being cautious, picky and wary. There is zero chance a casino would cause anything other than a march on city hall and the Capitol.

No casinos, no more Atlantic Stations, no more Underground Atlantas. GaSt's plan is by far the best for the property that I've seen.

That area is going to be considered a shady area no matter what you build there. Might as well build something that will actually make money. The casino is a good idea, but it won't happen.

RE: Georgia State's plan for Turner Field challenged - TheEagleWay - 07-24-2015 06:37 AM

Even if MGM could throw more money at it, I doubt gambling becomes legal in Georgia.

Maybe if there was a heavy tax on the casino that went into Hope... that might not be a stretch. In some ways, that could be a continuance of Zell Miller's plan.

This is the image that comes to mind when i think of casinos...

I disagree on the "shady" part. Western DeKalb along the MARTA line and Decatur in particular have become the hottest destination area in metro Atlanta. From a speculators perspective, the Turner Field area is the next stop on the redevelopment train. It's all coming together at just the right time.

the casino issue has come up many times here in texas too. it took many years for the horse racing folks to get on track betting and a few good tracks to be built. practically everyone here knows someone who travels to bossier city or to winstar and the argument is always that we are missing out on lots of tax revenue but the casino bills never pass.

I could've sworn people were saying State was a shoo-in to get this land because nobody really wants it.

If that's true, then someone needs to inform the Braves what they are missing out on by moving into the outer city.

Yes. The Governor's press secretary already went on the record on saying that yes casino gambling is gaining traction in Georgia, but has strong doubts anything will happen before the next inauguration day.

I take that to mean no gambling on Deal's watch. He just got reelected and that place can't sit idle for 2 years after the Braves leave.

Why are the opinions of the neighborhood people being given so much weight? If the neighborhood was attractive for business, the businesses would already be there.

Politicians decide what to do with this property. The people in the neighborhood vote on who their politicians are.
