It better fits the "revitalization" plan Mayor Reed has been pushing ever since he took office. Ponce City Market, CFB HOF, Civil Rights Museum, Aquarium, the Beltline, the purchase of Underground Atlanta, Tyler Perry buying Ft. McPherson, Falcons/United new stadium, streetcars, etc. There's an $8bn expansion of MARTA that's being proposed because the transit service has turned a profit three years in a row now. Another movie studio is going in the old Ford plant in Chamblee. Now the Masquerade and Smith's Olde Bar are shutting down because the land they sit on is too valuable. He saw how Atlantic Station helped turn the Westside into a desirable place to live. He's trying to replicate that model around the city. Big projects that kickstart gentrification in the areas around it. The Beltline is what's going to connect it all. I think the college campus idea is a better long term plan for that community around Turner than a casino. A casino would be better placed near the airport, or if the Hawks move from Philips, put it downtown on the MARTA line. A college atmosphere in that part of Atlanta would do wonders for the areas around it. Much more so than a casino. I'm in favor of both ideas though.

That's all well and good, but why they gotta tear down the Masquerade. :(

Time marches on and yes it sucks.
