Not True

Tennessee use to be East Tennesse University.
Auburn use to be East Alabama
Florida has roots has East Florida
So a lot of history of East in front of names for schools in the SEC actually fits East Carolina well.

LSU's real name is Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College but brand themselves as LSU.
University of Mississippi brands itself as Ole Miss for Athletics

So yes schools in the SEC do rebrand and brand themselves differently in athletics

Hold on there sport. Auburn was East Alabama Male College in the 1800's. We spent most of our time as Alabama Polytechnic Institute we become Auburn in the 50's I think. But the distinction here is nobody in those days gave a hoot about branding. That's a modern era snob reaction to directional names.

Should you ever be selected to a P conference I would keep my name. It defines where you are. And I would keep "Pirates" too since it is distinctive to the history of the area.

You only have two to three issues to address. 1. Academics With a medical school you can make up the ground here and have already started to do so. 2. Venue size. If you want to get into the SEC you need to be able to match our MEAN attendance figures which currently is 77,500 per game. There's work to be done here, especially if you want to host an SEC travel crowd. Finally there's the issue of the requisite number of sports and facilities.

Address those three issues and then the unthinkable suddenly becomes not only thinkable but doable. Besides we only have one other purple school and its on the Gulf. What most of us are becoming is Red/Maroon adverse.

Of course we would keep the Pirates name it is the best in college football. I know the name changes are old but my point was at some point you have to change to grow as a school. Most directional u's are a smaller public university with lower academic profiles. East Carolina is larger then the flagship school, UNC, and is continuing growing, should have 30,000 for 2017-2018 and plans for 33,000+ by 2022. We also are your more typical southern public school that is there to train the public in a four year institution and in masters and Phds. We have a medical school, engineering school, dental school, business school, teachers college, and more. Two things we do not have is a Pharmaceutical school (working on getting that, we had it then UNC board sent it to Elizabeth City who now has ran into the ground) and the other is a law schools (which I'm not sure is needed as there are enough law schools in NC). We do need to grow our academics and need to get into the 170s for Tier 1.


For stadium expansion we have a good size stadium now for where we are but yes of course stadium expansion would occur if we went into the SEC.



Expansion in the west endzone and upper deck in the east endzone would put our capacity at round 65,000 which would be perfect for us and the SEC. You have to remember you have UK, Vandy, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State around the size or smaller. With attendance going lower in the future I think 65,000 would be the perfect size for us in the SEC.
