I don't know if most Republicans were too respectful of the office or just too busy working and managing their own lives, but this has been true since Ford. Democrats have been held up for their intelligence (Carter, Clinton, Obama), while Ford, Reagan, George W., and Trump have been ridiculed for their lack of intelligence. Only George H.W. Bush was spared for the most part, though they did try it with him toward the end.
