RE: Deja Vu 5 Years Ago Stillwater News 9 Expects a Move Involving Both OU & OSU
There was definitely a disconnect between Scott and the Chancellors and Presidents. Once Texas and Texas A&M were out of the picture, effective Oklahoma State lost it's cover to get in the Pac-10. Scott, a TV guy and not an academic, didn;t seem to understand the problem OSU's R2 standing posed his members. When bundled with 5 R1 schools, including AAU schools like Texas, Texas A&M, and Colorado, as well as flagship Oklahoma, they were a tolerable addition. But when they were to be 50% of a package, that was -and still is- something that was never going to fly.
I can see how Oklahoma fans would be all insulted and such. But it's fundamentally a misunderstanding on both the Oklahoma side and Larry Scott what he was allowed to go for. I think had Scott been in charge of the Pac-10 for a longer period and understood the dynamics of his membership he never would have promised or implied in anyway that an OSU with OU package could work.
The remarks by Boren recently, and the leaks from OU sources, lead me to believe that the folks in Norman fully understand that they have to leave Stillwater behind no matter what conference they apply to. The state of Oklahoma does not offer enough resources to drag along a 2nd tier school like OSU. It doesn't matter if it's the B1G, the SEC or the P12. I don't think fans from Oklahoma fully comprehend the message. And Billy Bobby's family took it as personal, when it was strictly business. It's a reality; when Oklahoma leaves the Big XII they will leave Oklahoma State behind. David Boren understands this, the OU Athletic Department understands this. The fans don't.
