RE: "The Unluckiest City in Football" article
The reason the city of Memphis is without a strong FB presence is due to divided interests. I know this is about the pro aspect but a similar pattern played out in college FB. Instead of getting behind Memphis State, the dividied loyalties of the city leaders thought they'd lure & maintain big regional games involving UTK, OM, & UA. It's even in the promotional literature that led to building Crump Stadium, the Mid-South Coliseum & Memphis Memorial Stadium. A very short-sighted approach that has essential stunted the growth of our university. If leadership had been able to see beyond their personal loyalties, our university would likely have gained membership in the SEC in the 60s or the BE in the 80s. And more importantly, the impact of the much great revenues would likely have led to our university now being the FSU, Louisville or TCU story. Bottom line is that promoting the University of Memphis programs as a first priority would have & still is a better approach than promoting the city of Memphis benefit directly. If our university were in a power conference today & competing successfully, the city would be much greater beneficiary that attempting to control the facilities for the city benefit as a first priority - and would be receiving much great revenues through property taxes & tourism.
