Last year was really astonishing:
NIU OOC SOS Rank: 343
NIU Overall SOS Rank: 162
By just playing in the MAC, NIU improved its SOS by about 180.
And yes I know what the response to this post will be:
" SOS doesn't matter for NIU, its a 1 bid league, yada yada yada"
That stat says one thing. NIU beat up on the Little Sisters of the Poor in OOC and then had to play actual D1 College Teams - not elite or even good teams, just teams that were not made up of mostly intramural quality players. 162 is nothing to be proud of. 343 is downright embarrassing - the right thing to do to build confidence in a young team but embarrassing to the fan base none the less.
All that stat shows is how good the MAC was. It more than partially offset the weak non-conf schedule. What are there, something like 360 Div 1 teams? So 162 overall put them in the top half of Division 1 for SOS. That's not awful. So the way it ended up NIU was in the top half of SOS and still had a 20+ win season.
The MAC was okay but that was a really weak OOC schedule.
It was really weak, but it turned out to not be as big of a deal just because of how strong the MAC was.
One bid league. The MAC sucks dude
