RE: End of the Season Conference Power Rankings
I would throw UTSA into that middle group. They just played an insanely brutal OOC schedule that gave them no momentum and an 0-4 start. Hard to bounce back from that even in conference play.
The debate people seem to have here is putting Marshall at #2, even though most would likely feel that isn't right. The problem is Marshall was an inconsistent team this year. They had about a third of the schedule (against Southern Miss, Purdue, FAU, FIU, etc) where Marshall looked the part of a top team. Then there were a third of the schedule where Marshall's looked about as bad as they have in a quarter-century (Ohio, Kent, ODU, MTSU), and then there was a third of the schedule where it didn't matter how Marshall played because the result was basically going to happen this year regardless (Norfolk, Charlotte, NT, WKU).
Entering the year, I bought we'd be the team that dominated Southern Miss, curbstomped the Florida schools, and answered against Purdue. I thought we would see some inconsistencies, but not to the extent of putting up the worst QBR in school history and having probably the worst three game series in a season since 2000. On the balance, I think Marshall slightly disappointed this year, but I would probably rank them 4th due to inconsistencies behind USM and La Tech, though as we saw, Marshall was potentially capable of stepping up and beating those teams.
