In all honestly, I could see schools like EIU or WIU consolidating into one school. However, with NIU being in the region it is in I cannot fathom how NIU could close down. The most populated region in the state would be without a comprehensive university.

agreed. both of their tuitions are low already, so their operations are probably are quickly impacted by budgets.

Illinois also has a fair amount of other schools they could "scuttle" before moving to NIU:

Chicago State University
Eastern Illinois University
Governors State University
Illinois State University
Northeastern Illinois University
Northern Illinois University
Southern Illinois University
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
University of Illinois system
University of Illinois at Chicago
University of Illinois at Springfield
University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign
Western Illinois University
Western Illinois University-Quad Cities
