For one thing, there are a whole lot more high schools to recruit those big men from than there are transfers from colleges. More supply to choose from. With proper recruiting, you should be getting at least one of the guys you were going after at the high school level.

Secondly, if the coaching staff is willing to put in the time, they can build a relationship with the high school players they are wanting to recruit well before they have to make their decisions on where they will go.

Lastly, as someone has stated on here earlier, you have a chance to get someone like a Frank Hassell, Chris Cooper, or even a David Robinson that can come in and develop to the extent that if they had gone to another school and were to transfer as a senior then ODU would not likely be their choice to transfer to because the power 5 conference schools would be looking to get them. Our chances of getting a stellar inside player are better getting at least a regular diet of high school recruits then they are going the transfer route.

Our best chance at getting the great transfer are simply if they have a relative on the coaching staff (Stiths) or are looking to be close to home for one reason or another (Freeman, Painter).

What about Porter or Arledge?

Nice players, but aren't on the level of Laughton, Lee, or Hassell. And the proof is in the lack of NCAA bids.

Porter is a soph. How would we know? Hassell really didnt do much until his senior year so it may be a stretch to say hes significantly better than Porter.

I would trade any interior player we have on the team today for a reincarnation of Frank to come in for his junior and senior seasons again. As a junior he was listed as 6'-9", 255 lbs. He averaged 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot per game while sharing the load inside with Gerald Lee (another stellar freshman recruit).

To say that Hassell really didn't do much until his senior year is simply not accurate.
