According to Bruce Marshall of goldsheet.com in an interview on San Diego Sports Talk radio XX 1090 AM. Check in at about 3:50

Sounds like the amount of $$ in the upcoming TV contracts for both the MWC/C-USA merger and the New Big East will be a huge factor. Also what happens with the BCS system of automatic qualifiers. Finding a home for the other sports is an issue as well. Not as much for SDSU (going to the Big West... definitely a drop off for us for Basketball however) but the WAC is falling apart (where Boise States other sports will land) and is also a major drop off for Boise State for all their other sports. I don't think this is over quite yet... interesting. 05-stirthepot
