Boise State & SDSU possibly staying in MWC/C-USA? - SDSU-Alum2003 - 02-23-2012 06:25 PM

According to Bruce Marshall of goldsheet.com in an interview on San Diego Sports Talk radio XX 1090 AM. Check in at about 3:50

Sounds like the amount of $$ in the upcoming TV contracts for both the MWC/C-USA merger and the New Big East will be a huge factor. Also what happens with the BCS system of automatic qualifiers. Finding a home for the other sports is an issue as well. Not as much for SDSU (going to the Big West... definitely a drop off for us for Basketball however) but the WAC is falling apart (where Boise States other sports will land) and is also a major drop off for Boise State for all their other sports. I don't think this is over quite yet... interesting. 05-stirthepot

Bullchit. Just another writer stirring the pot to get people to the site. Hasn't anyone realized these tricks yet?

I don't believe it, but we really need to add a couple of western schools to solidify our western flank. Get Air Force on board plus someone else (UNLV, Colorado State, Fresno, New Mexico, Nevada, etc.).

The TCU Exception has been modified. If they want out now, it's still $10 million.

RE: Boise State & SDSU possibly staying in MWC/C-USA? - justinslot - 02-23-2012 06:59 PM

Why on earth wouldn't they come to the BE for at least the final two years of the BCS? (Or is it the final year? I know the contract ends in 2014, but does that mean the 2014-15 season is the last, or the 2013-14?)

Just add East Carolina and Southern Miss and say bye. 05-stirthepot

That's only for current Big East members. SDSU and Boise State is still $5 million and it goes down depending on various stipulations in the contract.

Actually the buy out is only 1 million if the Big East loses AQ status. The reality is that the MW/CUSA will increase thier contract to around 3 million and the New Big East will be around 10-12 million. Thats a big difference.

That would suck. I didn't want to leave the Alliance, and still don't, but that would just suck.

I agree. Numbers may not be exactly right but I expect the Big East to get at least double what the Alliance gets.

Common sense tells you that if BSU and SDSU left, they'd be joining a conference that would be poached (at least) twice more.

Logically, it doesn't mesh with reality.

RE: Boise State & SDSU possibly staying in MWC/C-USA? - TripleA - 02-23-2012 08:45 PM

Agree. Absolutely no logic in that. I think the money for BE all sports will certainly be double or better, perhaps even triple, especially since there will be 12-14 FB teams in the BE, and maybe 18-24 in the Alliance.

RE: Boise State & SDSU possibly staying in MWC/C-USA? - TripleA - 02-23-2012 08:57 PM

I just did some quick message board digging. All this is coming from one guy at goldsheet.com. His argument is based on the next projected media deals for the BE vs. the Alliance. He claims that the Alliance may get 3-4 times per school what they get now, and the BE may get much less than anticipated, b/c ESPN backed off the last contract. 01-wingedeagle

Do I really need to say anything else?

Interesting perspective from HawaiiMongoose on the MWC Board...

"I think any speculation about BSU and SDSU having second thoughts is just that, speculation.

Having said that, keep in mind that there's as much or more basketball value in the Big East TV contract as there is football value. Houston, SMU, Memphis and UCF which are joining as full members will reap that full combined basketball and football value, so I think it's highly unlikely that any of them will reconsider their decision. However BSU and SDSU as football-only members of the Big East will receive only partial shares of TV money based on the Big East's football value. And they will earn essentially nothing from having basketball in the WAC and Big West respectively.

So the question for BSU and SDSU is not whether the Big East can get a better TV deal than the Alliance. The question is whether the Big East can get a better TV deal for football only members than the Alliance can get for all sports members. "

Yeah, that's true, but do you think that 18-24 FB teams in the Alliance can get more per school than 12 in the BE, when the BE commands by far, the bigger markets and the better TV draws? I think it's not even close.

Good point by Mr Mongoose.

I wonder if goldsheet.com is providing odds on the size of the BE and Alliance television deals...

I wish he would. We could all make a little extra pocket money.

It all pivots on whether Boise has a place to put their other sports.

I think it is pretty much a mechanical if, then.

If the Alliance (or the old Wac Commish Hot Karl Benson soon to be Sun Belt commish) kills the WAC, then Boise has nowhere really to go, and the far east and front range are excluded and a new conference starts of boise, sdsu and pals. And it has nothing to do with money or cold feet but rather the simple fact that Boise would have nothing else to do.

RE: Boise State & SDSU possibly staying in MWC/C-USA? - Cubanbull - 02-23-2012 09:14 PM

You can't kill the WAC. There are non football members in it plus teams the Sun belt will not want o absorb because of location
