SPOKANE, Wash. - -

The Oregon State men's soccer team outshot Wisconsin 12-10, but ultimately suffered its first setback in a 2-1 loss on Sunday morning at the Gonzaga/Nike Classic in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

OSU (2-1-0) pulled even at 1-1 when senior Aaron McHardy netted a penalty kick at the 79:01 mark for his first goal of the year.

The shot was set up when sophomore Chad Bartlome got behind the defense and pushed past the final UW defender, who took Bartlome down in the box for the foul.

Wisconsin (4-0-0) answered in the 85th minute when Phil Doeh drove in his second goal of the day after a UW corner kick rebounded in front of the net, giving the Badgers a 2-1 win.

Doeh's first goal came at 33:20, when John McGrady and Ryan Nord combined to set up Doeh off a throw-in and a quick pass.

OSU had a few shots that were nearly scores, but perhaps the closest call was a header by redshirt freshman Matt Johnson in the second half.

On a loose ball, Johnson headed a shot toward an apparently empty net, but a UW defender managed to dive in front and deflect the shot with his chest to save the goal.

In all, OSU forced six UW saves on the day, all of them in the second half, when the Beavers outshot the Badgers 10-5. Junior transfer Alan Gordon led the attack with four shots, while Brian Farber and Joe Zaher had three each.

Peter Billmeyer saved four shots on the day, and earned the Outstanding Goalkeeper award for the tournament.

"The entire team put forth the effort today," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "We just lost our focus at two key times, and we paid the price for it."

OSU comes home after splitting its two games this weekend; the Beavs topped Air Force 4-2 Friday.

"We've traveled over 8,500 miles now over the last month, so we'll be glad to come home," Taylor said, referring to the miles logged over the last two weekends with two trips to Spokane, as well as the team's trip to Costa Rica in August. "We're excited to play in front of our own fans, and we're looking forward to the challenge of another weekend."

The Beavers host the OSU/Diadora Classic on Sept. 13 and 15, as they take on Cal-Riverside Friday at 5 p.m., and play Tulsa at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The tournament will feature two other games, as Tulsa and Gonzaga battle Friday at 3 p.m., and UC-Riverside and Gonzaga square off Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
