SPOKANE, Wash. - -

The Oregon State men's soccer team outshot Wisconsin 12-10, but ultimately suffered its first setback in a 2-1 loss on Sunday morning at the Gonzaga/Nike Classic in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

OSU (2-1-0) pulled even at 1-1 when senior Aaron McHardy netted a penalty kick at the 79:01 mark for his first goal of the year.

The shot was set up when sophomore Chad Bartlome got behind the defense and pushed past the final UW defender, who took Bartlome down in the box for the foul.

Wisconsin (4-0-0) answered in the 85th minute when Phil Doeh drove in his second goal of the day after a UW corner kick rebounded in front of the net, giving the Badgers a 2-1 win.

Doeh's first goal came at 33:20, when John McGrady and Ryan Nord combined to set up Doeh off a throw-in and a quick pass.

OSU had a few shots that were nearly scores, but perhaps the closest call was a header by redshirt freshman Matt Johnson in the second half.

On a loose ball, Johnson headed a shot toward an apparently empty net, but a UW defender managed to dive in front and deflect the shot with his chest to save the goal.

In all, OSU forced six UW saves on the day, all of them in the second half, when the Beavers outshot the Badgers 10-5. Junior transfer Alan Gordon led the attack with four shots, while Brian Farber and Joe Zaher had three each.

Peter Billmeyer saved four shots on the day, and earned the Outstanding Goalkeeper award for the tournament.

"The entire team put forth the effort today," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "We just lost our focus at two key times, and we paid the price for it."

OSU comes home after splitting its two games this weekend; the Beavs topped Air Force 4-2 Friday.

"We've traveled over 8,500 miles now over the last month, so we'll be glad to come home," Taylor said, referring to the miles logged over the last two weekends with two trips to Spokane, as well as the team's trip to Costa Rica in August. "We're excited to play in front of our own fans, and we're looking forward to the challenge of another weekend."

The Beavers host the OSU/Diadora Classic on Sept. 13 and 15, as they take on Cal-Riverside Friday at 5 p.m., and play Tulsa at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The tournament will feature two other games, as Tulsa and Gonzaga battle Friday at 3 p.m., and UC-Riverside and Gonzaga square off Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Zaher's Last-Minute Goal Tops Portland, 2-1
OSU off to best start in school history at 8-1-0.

Oct. 2, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - -

Joe Zaher's goal with 32 seconds remaining lifted the Oregon State men's soccer team past in-state rival Portland by a count of 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Lorenz Field.

The Beavers have won the last two meetings with Portland and upped their record to 8-1-0 on the season - the best start in school history.

OSU has won all three of its matches at Lorenz Field this year; it also equaled the school's longest winning streak with six victories.

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the final minute, Zaher gained control of the ball in the left corner of Portland's third. Zaher dribbled through three defenders, driving to the center of the box for a 10-yard shot past UP keeper Curtis Spiteri and a 2-1 win with 32 seconds remaining.

It was the fifth goal of the year and third game-winner for Zaher, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nev.

The match was less than a minute old when UP's (7-4-0) Nate Jaqua slipped through the defense and one-timed a centering pass from Heath Pearce past OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer in the near corner for a 1-0 lead 35 seconds into the contest.

Alan Gordon brought the Beavers even in the 34th minute when he made a run up the left side of the field. Gordon edged past a UP defender and put a 15-yard shot past a charging Curtis Spiteri to make it 1-1.

"Every year, it seems like we have a pretty good match," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "But I think the way it happened today was a great way to end - it's certainly not the way you have it scripted out.

"There's been a rivalry throughout the years, and Portland has such a tradition of excellence, that this is something we measure ourselves by - 'How do we fare with Portland?'"

Portland entered the matchup ranked sixth in the far west region, and OSU was eighth.

In goal, Billmeyer made four saves and broke up several UP offensive threats throughout the game. OSU's defense held the Pilots to 12 shots while the offense fired 15 of its own; UP was also without a corner kick in the match.

"We were beaten up coming in," Taylor said. "We had some injuries and started different people. We were a little out of sync in the first 20 minutes, but the guys adjusted well after getting scored on so early in the match.

"They fought back and showed some resolve and grinded it out. There are so many guys that played well today.

"We are starting to show teams in the region and around the country that we have built a program at OSU, and we can play," Taylor said.

OSU's next match is Sunday, Oct. 6, when the Beavers host St. Mary's at 1 p.m. The Beavers open their Pacific-10 schedule the following week with a match at California on Oct. 11 and at Stanford on Oct. 13.

OSU Tops St. Mary's, 4-2
Beavers extend win streak to school-record seven games.

Oct. 6, 2002

Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - -

The Oregon State men's soccer team extended its win streak to a school-record seven games in a row with a decisive 4-2 win over St. Mary's (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field.

The win sets up OSU for its Pacific-10 Conference opener Friday, Oct. 11 at California, and added to the best start in school history, giving the Beavers a 9-1-0 mark.

After grinding through the first 24 minutes, OSU exploded in the 25th minute with two goals in 49 seconds for a 2-0 lead.

Alan Gordon ignited the attack when he took a through pass from Aaron McHardy and went one-on-one with St. Mary's keeper Aaron Valdez. Gordon calmly put a shot into the right corner from the top of the box for his ninth goal of the year and a 1-0 advantage at the 24:10 mark.

Joe Zaher made it 2-0 at 24:59 when Gordon flicked a pass across the goal mouth to the far post, where Zaher controlled it and tapped it in from point-blank range.

The Beavers scored next on a set piece in the 39th minute. Ross Duncan sent an indirect kick toward the far post from 30 yards, where it was tapped across the goal mouth by Josh Boys to Chad Bartlome, who knocked in his third goal of the season and gave the Beavers a 3-0 halftime lead.

"We're 9-1, so the guys are doing something right," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "However, our play today was not up to the standard that it needs to be heading into Pac-10 play. We were sloppy offensively and defensively in the first 20 minutes, but once we scored that first goal, our play picked up and we took the momentum."

A Matthew Walker goal in the 55th minute brought the Gaels (2-7-3) within 3-1 after Adam Zielske's shot was blocked by OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer but rebounded to Walker, who put it in. Billmeyer totaled six saves in the match.

Aaron McHardy tacked on his sixth goal of the year in the 68th minute to make it 4-1, but St. Mary's Patrick Lower put a shot in the back of the net off a pass from Brian Rhodes five minutes later for the final score of 4-2.

"I was pleased with our four goals today," Taylor said. "The offense has been successful all year at finding the back of the net, so they're very confident going into Pac-10s.

"As a team, we need to be more stingy defensively. We were a bit unorganized in the back, but, that said, a lot of guys got valuable playing experience, so I was pleased with that."

McHardy is now tied for fourth on OSU's all-time points list, matching Jason Lensch's 47 career points. In his career, McHardy has 20 goals and seven assists.

Gordon's goal and assist give him 22 points in 10 games this year, placing him in a tie for seventh on OSU's all-time season points list. The junior has nine goals and four assists on the year.

OSU's seven consecutive wins tops the former school standard of six, a streak achieved in 1992 and again in 1994. The longest unbeaten streak is nine games, dating back to the 1990 season and carrying over into 1991.
