Luke Reynolds hit a grand slam tonight. Twitter says it was a liner over the RF wall.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
Way too early guess at next year's lineup/rotation:

1) Franklin - CF
2) Reynolds/Maack - 3B
3) Slater - 1B
4) Hoard/Viaene/Keating - DH
5) Wallner - LF/RHP
6) Irby - RF
7) Guidry/Cooper/Montenegro - 2B
8) Donaldson/Bowen - C
9) Boyd/Keys - SS

Rotation: Wallner, Powell, Smith (Weirich or Nelms midweek)
Middle relief: Strickland, Keys, Hayes, Case
Situational: Powers, Driver, Tweedy
Backend: Bradford, Sandlin

I think that's good enough to get to a regional....maybe?

I think Slater will be odd man out in outfield unless we try to use Wallner as DH/RHP only.

Why would Driver not be your Middle Relief? He was one of our consistent relievers who could throw strikes...

Seemed to be used in more of a situational role this year vs righty bats.

I like that he throws strikes, but he was hit hard for much of the year.

Man, I hate that we only got one year out of him as a pitcher.

Congrats to him. Well deserved.

It appears the Southern Miss baseball team will have to replace its ace and four pitchers total to begin the 2018 season.

Junior left-hander Kirk McCarty, the Eagles' primary starter this year, is expected to sign with the Cleveland Indians after he passes a physical for the team, USM head coach Scott Berry said on Wednesday.

I didn't realize he was on an extended 28-man roster. He won't actually get the chance to play in all the games.

"28-man roster selections will compete in both the Coastal Plain League and Chinese Taipei series"

This article makes it seems like he will be on the final team no matter what.

Beer, the 2016 Freshman of the Year, is returning to the CNT, but just five position players are locks to join the team. Two-way star Matt Wallner (Southern Mississippi) headlines the rest of the bats after swatting 19 home runs in his freshman year.

Clemson, Oklahoma and Oregon State each have two players on the provisional roster. The bolded players are guaranteed spots on the final team.

Per Munz, Wallner is no longer on the USA CNT. Said they wanted him as more of a RHP, and while his hip is improving, it's still nagging him.

Looks like a few players who were in the CWS arrived in the last few days. That might have left Wallner without much to do in the field.

Definitely a good decision for Wallner to sit out the summer if they wanted him as a pitcher and he's still hurting.

What we decide to do with Wallner on the mound is going to be really interesting.

On another note, have you emotionally recovered from the State game?

Sorta. I mean, it's still not pleasant to think about. Took about a day for me to grasp the magnitude of our collapse.

I saw it coming a mile away though. I was warning people about the dangers of State coming here 2-3 weeks before the selections were made (most didn't listen). Knew that it was a perfect setup for a classic TTT moment. However, I figured MSU would run through the regional and go 3-0. The fact they lost the first game and still found a way to win the thing makes it that much worse.

Even after they lost to USA, I still thought they had (at least) a 50% chance to win, and was pretty much convinced that MSU would win the regional after they pulled a win out of their ass vs UIC in the loser's bracket game.

Really like this Grantland (RIP) article from a few years ago. Pretty sure we've all experienced every one of these at some point rooting for USM.

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-20...orts-fans/

During the State game, I'd say I was definitely #8 and #9. #18 after Rooker's pop up dropped in RF. Some of #4 (switched seats at PTP after game 1). Afterwards, probably #6.
