Looks like we're losing another beat writer
Stephanie Kuzydym @stephkuzy
When I started covering Rice, people kept telling me Rice athletes are different. I didn't get it. Now I do.

From players running off the field early for class to their worried faces because they have a test they need to study for.

Covering Rice was an unforgettable experience. So I'm sad that I won't be covering the Owls or writing for the Houston Chronicle anymore.
Shame, I thought she did a good job

I think I see the problem here. We need to find out how to keep the Chronicle from beating their writers. Stop Journalist abuse now!

Good luck to Stephanie in her future endeavors. She can do better than the Chronicle.

I don't know what he is doing ... and I still follow him on twitter! He covers the local pro sports teams, but I am not sure how often or where he publishes anything, or for who.

He generally still has a place in his heart for Rice, but then he'll post stuff like this on twitter:
MoiseKapenda Bower @moisekapenda 31 Dec 2015
I remember when #Rice fans derisively called Tom Herman “Mensa” when they disagreed with his play-calling. Halcyon days. #PeachBowl #UHvsFSU
Russell Henderson @RVHenderson
@moisekapenda sometimes, it's not the right fit. Was Belichick a "genius" at Cleveland?

Don’t think it was a “fit” issue. It was classic Rice haughtiness dismissing a young coordinator. Elated for him.

Come on MK - how do you figure that Rice haughtily dismissed Herman ???? He got his salary tripled by Iowa State, a P5 team. That's why he left. He wasn't dismissed. Same with Yancy McKnight.
I've always been a MK fan, by the way, and will continue to be.

1. That's a shame. Where's Stephanie going? Best of luck to her.
2. Really hope -- but not holding my breath -- that the Chron decides to find a replacement.

I took the tweet that way as well. I don't know if Rice's "haughtiness", classic or not, was the issue. Could it be that Herman learned things while the OC at Iowa State, and, more importantly, Ohio St. (under Urban Meyer), that informed how he coaches now, some 7 years after his Rice employment?

I think she doesn't want to cover Football in general. I was so confused on her coverage of football: One tweet about football, followed by 14 tweets telling us how bad football is because of concussions.
Not quite sure if she even likes football.
Bring on the next one.

I think MK hit the nail on the head with his tweets. His tweets have nothing to do with the Rice admin, but as fans. Based on his tweets, he is almost certainly talking about the Rice fans dismissing Mensa. He mentions how it was fans who condescendingly called Herman Mensa while at Rice. The response to him was suggesting that maybe he wasn't that good at Rice because of a fit. MK then says that fit wasn't the reason people gave him the condescending nickname, instead it was the Rice "haughtiness," as he puts it, that lead us fans to think he wasn't as good as he should be.
And to the comment above - Herman most definitely learned a number of things in the 6 years of assistant coaching he did after Rice, no question there. He probably learned the most under Meyer who is arguably one of the Top 5 coaches in the game at the moment. However, it was obvious that he was a gifted offensive coordinator, especially in regards to passing, watching his offense during the '07 and '08 seasons.

After his "haughtiness" tweet, I sent him this: "some haughtiness can develop among those with the intestinal fortitude to stay for all 4 years to earn a Rice degree."
Boom.

RE: Looks like we're losing another beat writer
In case some of you don't remember, I was one of those criticizing Mensa pretty heavily when he was here. In the years since he left, our offense continues to have pretty much the same problems that I criticized when he was here, while his offenses have looked very different. Two possibilities--one, he learned a lot from Paul Rhoas and Urban Meyer; two, the problem was Bailiff and not Mensa. I'll leave you to figure out which one, or to what degree each one applies.

MK writes for CultureMap Houston and has for the last several years. His dismissal from Rice by Ranger Rick still bothers him I suspect as he had a good relationship with CDC. I've spoken with him off and on and had asked him if he had met Coach Rhoades (he was not a Braun fan since Braun wanted to shut out the media completely) and he said no and kind of inferred that he basically has moved on with regard to Rice. Really a shame.
