Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium - hooverblazer - 11-28-2017 01:45 PM

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2017/11/this_is_a_new_day_at_city_hall.html#incart_river_index

Woodfin said he supports a new downtown stadium, and he wants it to happen now through a public-private partnership.

"I don't want to spend the next four years talking about it," he said. "We have been talking about it for over 30 years. We need to either do it or not."

Woodfin said the city would be a partner in the stadium. "If we want to get this done, let's do it," he said.

No. He doesn't want the city to have to pay for all of it. I don't think that's ever been on the table, though. The county will be in on it as well as the city and I'm sure our corporate sponsors will want to continue backing a winning horse.

Randall, That dog won't hunt. Only entity that anyone is waiting on is the city no matter how many time or ways you spin it.

You are not getting a free facility. The City will have to commit the lodging tax that was purposed for a new facility in the first place that the city has been utilizing elsewhere. You can either **** or get off the toilet.

The city isn't and never was. Everyone has ponied up but the City. County, Private, and UAB all though I have not been told what capacity that is on UAB's part but we are on board.

As Woodfin is pointing out, talk is cheap. To actually build something, one must have real money offered, not just talk of money. So far, talk is all that is being offered while the parties seem to want B'ham to come up with the real money. As with UAB's offer to rent the new stadium once built, much has been said but little has been financially offered to get it done.

Some blanks that need to be filled (besides B'ham):
UAB $____
Hoover $_____
Jeffco $_____
Private $_____
Metro Suburbs $_____
State $_____

It sounds like either he repeated what he said prior, or they just quoted his past comment.

From the article I'm assuming he was just inaugurated today. I guess the clock is ticking now. If Birmingham balks, could the donors pitch it to Homewood? If that's a potential threat, Birmingham might not appreciate losing all those potential out of town lodgers and diners and parking to across the mountain.

Wrong. Everyone is at the table except birmingham. He is playing a game and he better hope it doesn’t backfire on him.

So what are the next steps to call him out on it?

Where did you pull that assumption out of thin air?

OK, IF that assumption is out of thin air, then fill in those blanks with promised amounts.

RE: Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium - WesternBlazer - 11-28-2017 04:09 PM

Previously, a JeffCo commisioner said Bham's portion of the cost was about $3M/year. Bham's annual budget is $430M. Surely, this can't fall apart due to less than 1% of the city budget...

OK, that fills in B'ham's blank. Now fill in the others. Jeffco commissioners can be very free with B'ham's money -- how about their own? (They still have Cooper Green (mercy?) Hospital closed for inpatient care - it is operated as an American Family type "Doc in the box" outpatient care facility)

Who (outside your family) would you like to tell you how to spend your money?

He is either ignorant of the process or is assuming that everyone else is ignorant for political gain.

If "everyone is at the table except B'ham", one should be able to fill in those blanks on the list with specific dollar amounts. If not, then the "game" is still "Make a sucker out of B'ham by ganging up on it while we ride for free".

RE: Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium - hooverblazer - 11-28-2017 06:17 PM

The city council's parks & rec committee is meeting tomorrow to hear a proposed plan for the city to spend $25M over 5 years on capital upgrades to Legion Field. You've got to be kidding me.

It is not so much that Legion Field will be made new again for that money. It is that so far, Legion Field remains the ONLY viable facility in the metro area that can accommodate the games already on B'ham's scheduled events list. Now IF those other municipality gov'ts, private sources and UAB actually put up real money for a new facility, then the City Council can work with that instead. So far, all that has been talked about is how much B'ham should provide for a new facility.

RE: Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium - UAB Band Dad - 11-28-2017 06:34 PM

Just because the plan for the stadium at the BJCC, including all the projected budget numbers, has not been published does not mean that it hasn't been discussed and planned.

Pumping $25m into Legion Field is a waste of money that the city can't afford to piss away.

Some ideas seem innocent but trace the idea to it's source and you won't be surprised.

Oh I’m not surprised.
