I would love to see the program get back to some sort of relevance and hope it does, be it Butler or the next guy.

With that said, I do get quite tired of hearing people bring up Gene. He'd run his course and been given more time than he should have gotten because he was Gene. The program was declining under his watch and wasn't going to rise with his lack of ambition. His only concern was milking as many wins as possible to pass Soggy.

Butler obviously gets one more year and it is what it is. I don't know what the schedule looks like, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a much weaker non-con schedule in order to get as many wins as possible knowing that the AAC is going to crush this roster. Will it be enough? I guess we'll find out next May after our season ends.

I know it's not about Gene. Gene was brought up as a reference. His worst teams that everyone wanted to ride him out of town with are way better than anything Butler has produced. We fired Gene after an NCAA regional but keep Butler after 3 straight losing seasons and 2 or 3 game exits in the Valley tournament with 5th place finishes?

I don't think it's fair to say Gene just wanted to coast his way out. He was a pretty competitive guy. I'm pretty sure he didn't like not going to NCAA tournaments and what not. To just say he didn't care is a little shortsighted IMO. Did a change need to be made? Sure. Was Sexton kicking a legend that kept Wichita State University athletics relevant for 3 decades out like a bag of trash necessary? Absolutely not. And more importantly, Todd Butler in 4 years has regressed the program. He couldn't even maintain the dipping status quo. And to think there are people around here that believe Butler deserves more time after year 4 with all of "his players" that resulted in more mediocre baseball is inconceivable to me.

And if he doesn't compete at a high level in the AAC, with promising growth from the younger players, it will be time to move on.

He couldn't compete at a high level in the Missouri freaking Valley. Why would you think WSU is going to magically be a Top 25 team next year? And more importantly, why would you think he deserves a chance when his entire head coaching history has been hot garbage?

Promising growth? In year 5? Are you even paying attention to this program?
