Huggs goes for Win 800 - bearcatmark - 12-15-2016 09:32 AM

Really good article from Decourcy... I'm posting it here because there is a ton of talk about UC in it and many of the former Bearcat players that he achieved much of his success with.

Easily. Huggs has just been damn good wherever he's been. How many people, much less coaches, can say that about their career?

As your list shows, even that is tough to do. There are a lot of coaches that don't have any.

Valid criticism, but I'd also point out that much of that list consists of guys that coached at blue blood programs. Heck of a lot easier, IMHO, to recruit top talent at places like Duke, UNC, UK and UCLA. Of course, the counterargument is that it's a heck of a lot easier to rack up 800 victories with CUSA and Great Midwest competition.

Dam that is a lot of wins, Congrats Huggs.

There were a lot of good teams in Metro/Great Midwest/CUSA
Ville, Memphis, DePaul, Marquette, St. Louis, UNCC etc.

Bearcats have three coaches with 2 or more; only a few schools can match or beat that.

Yeah, I don't disagree. But outside of those teams there were a lot of easy wins. Not necessarily the case in leagues like the Big East, ACC, etc... Just playing devil's advocate.

You mean Doggie Julian is not going to make the Hall of Fame?!

Not many college coaches without a ring are in the HOF (I think it's just Pete Carill, Lou Carnesecca, and John Chaney). I hope Huggs gets it, and I think he should, but I wouldn't call it a cinch.

Are we talking Naismith or NCB Hall of Fame? Naismith is pretty selective. NCB has plenty of guys that didn't win a national title. Heck, I believe Lefty Driesell is an inductee and he never made it to a final four. If guys like Driesell and Eddie Sutton are in, Huggins has to be in.

Good luck coach huggs... there were a lot of lean years before his arrival. he made UC relevant again.

I meant Naismith. I didn't even remember that they started the other one. You're right that he'll assuredly get into that.

What's the ratio of multiple final four coaches to all DI coaches since the inception of the NCAA?

Arguably did it with less talent than any other coach that's been to multiple FF's. And the time he did have the best talent in the country it was stolen from him...

Good luck Coach Huggs. Say what you want, but Bob is probably the second most iconic Bearcat athlete/coach in our history. I don't know what the count is , but I am pretty sure Calipari and K have had more McDonalds AA's in one class than Huggs has had in over 30 years of his career. Yet he has a winning record against both coaches.

I'm among the biggest Huggs admirers you'll find but I think he's a clear third behind the Big O and Ed Jucker. Jucker had a three years stretch with two national championships and a runner up. IIRC he still might have the best winning percentage in the NCAA tournament. His career winning percentage was .801. He was the original architect of the tough, defense first brand of basketball UC's always been known for. Not only that, he recruited Sandy Koufax to UC.

I don't disagree that Jucker was incredible in his short stint. For that matter George Smith for recruiting Oscar as well as the rosters for the back to back title teams.

However, I still think Huggins is way more recognized as related to UC than Jucker.

I won't discount Smith's accomplishments, but Jucker completely transformed the program. He turned an up tempo, high scoring squad that couldn't reach the promised land into a blue collar, defense oriented team that dominated college basketball. All a matter of opinion in the end. UC has been blessed with some fantastic coaches.
