Another nice outing from the Homer. Reds take 2 of 3 from Zona and finish the road trip winning 4 of 7. All Star break here we come...

According to a bathroom wall in Uncle Woody's (which it turns out was an absolutely brilliant thing to have written there as you will see), I was lead to believe it was a Tom Waits (for no man) quote. So I was surprised to see it attributed to Dorothy Parker in this thread and decided to do a little research which yielded the following article (including citations):
Quote:Entry from January 19, 2009
"I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy” is one of the most famous of modern drinking quips. But who said it first?
The musician Tom Waits said the line on the August 1, 1977 episode of the television show Fernwood2night, a parody of The Tonight Show. Waits played a song, and then said the line in pre-scripted banter with the show’s host. it would appear that a television comedy writer should get credit for the line, but Waits said in a 2005 interview that he first read it on a bathroom wall.
“Dr. Rock” (Randy Hanzlick, M.D.) wrote a song titled “I’d Rather Have a Bottle in Front of Me (Than a Frontal Lobotomy).” The song is a favorite of the Dr. Demento radio show. Dr. Hanzlick also has claimed that he found the line from a bathroom wall, although his song was written in 1980 (three years after Waits said the line on television).
The line is sometimes credited to writer Dorothy Parker (1893-1967), but there is no evidence at all to support this. Other authorship claims—also without evidence—have been given for actor W. C. Fields and radio wit Fred Allen.
Google Books has an interesting citation (see below) of the quotation from 1965. If properly verified, it is the earliest citation of the quip. There is also a 1976 citation (see below) from comedian Steve Allen, who possibly used the joke much earlier on a television show.
I think my original bathroom wall source was pretty close, but based upon the article I'm inclined to credit the great Steve Allen:
Quote:(Steve Allen is Dr. Mal Practice, being interviewed by Jayne Meadows—ed.)
Jayne: “I was thinking of a prefrontal lobotomy.”
Steve: “A free bottle in front of me? Listen, you need a prefrontal lobotomy like you need a hole in your head.”

Pitching dominant in All-Star game thus far. No surprise. Cozart has one of the five base hits for the National League. Time to put Votto in the game and watch the master work at the plate.

Did someone see who threw the lights out sucker punch? Beatdown in Natti town. Outscored 29-11 over the three game series with the Nats. First place team against last place team. Check.

I didn't realize it was a four game series - make that outscored 34-12 with 4 innings to go.

I guess my wife accepted a friends invite to go to the day game on Thursday.
Oh boy - watching the Reds pitching batting practice to Arizona in 90 degree humid weather should be fun.

Doc just wrote the requisite "be patient, Reds fans" article a month or so ago and I laughed.
This one feels less like it was paid for by the hometown nine's marketing department. This "rebuild" could last until Joey Votto is doing color commentary for Fox Sports Ohio.

With not a lot of teams looking for a SS, Feldman was probably the Red most likely to get flipped for prospects. The only hitch being finding anyone even remotely capable of replacing his innings made it tough to deal him.
Now the Reds may be out on both ends and he's the latest SP to the DL. At this rate, even if they went with a batting tee, it would break within a week or two...

RE: Baseball Season 2017
at least they just suck at rebuilding and are attempting rather than whatever the hell the late 90's and most of the 2000's was. i kinda hope within the first decade of this project that lots of people get fired and joey votto to be the first player manager since peter rose to hit a home run
