RE: Athletic Department cuts around the country - 2017 Edition
Wright State is considering cutting men's golf as part of their budget cuts.

Just checking the Nebraska athletics website: the coaching staff for beach are all listed as coaches for indoor, including the same head coach. The roster for beach is mostly the same as indoor, with a few different. I could well be wrong that rosters for indoor and beach would be different. If it happens that way, then so be it.
However, I am absolutely correct that sand and indoor are very different sports, and not really complimentary in several factors. The benefit would be the additional playing time/reps. NOT because being good at sand helps your indoor game. That is not true. You can continue to deny that, but it just means you haven't played the two different types and don't understand the differences.
All you need to do is go to the EiA website and select any particular school, then click on the participants tab. The bottom line is *unduplicated* participants. That's what the DOEd cares about, for Title IX. https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/institution/search
The game is different strategy wise but the fundamental skills of serve receive, hitting cut shots at an angle, digging a hit, serving a ball are all the same. I would guess every outside hitter on the Nebraska roster is on the beach roster. Some middles and Liberos may not be but the outsides were not given a choice I'm sure.
As for participation rates. You see no mention of unduplicated participants in this study...

Btw. The word is complementary.

Full rotation players are often told to play beach versus being kept from playing beach. The hours of allowed practice in the off season is a fraction of the allowed hours in season.
The real reason for this move, is it allows schools to cut sports scholarship or hold sport expenses flat but keep their participation numbers up. The girls who play both sports count as two participants but only cost a single scholarship for the school. When the Federal Government asks to see participation numbers (especially for women) the school can show them growing without actually having to spend more dollars. This trend is all about showing Title IX compliance on the cheap.
Yeah, there are games they can play with it. Beach volleyball is an equivalency sport; even though there are only 3 scholarship equivalents, you can divide that up among several athletes (e.g., give 6 half-scholarships or 9 one-third scholarships) which, as you said, increases participation numbers for women. Trying to equalize participation numbers is a challenge for some schools because there are a few men's sports (including football, basketball, and baseball) that often have a large number of walk-on players, which can increase men's participation numbers well above the number of men on athletic scholarships.

That's like saying "playing sand football with 4 vs 4 is basically the same thing as playing grass football with 11 vs 11, because the fundamental skills of throwing the ball, handing the ball off, blocking, and tackling are all the same."
In other words, the game is 90% different. If I'm the indoor coach, I'd rather my girls just get more practice reps hitting, setting, and bumping.
The lone positive I see out of it is that it gives the volleyball coach a defacto three extra scholarship equivalences to give to vball players. In other words, a bench player on the indoor team can get a scholarship via the sand team.

The article mostly talks about the number of teams.
The figure citing participants also doesn't say that it duplicated. Probably wiser to assume its talking about unduplicated participants.

Oh, these cuts are nothing compared to the cuts states will have to do in order to keep up with federal cuts by our republican congress and president coming down the pike.

Who exactly should make decisions on government spending if not the elected officials?
Flip the equation, I have to watch Democrats in legislature and the Governor spend my money on mad schemes like the train to nowhere, and all sorts of inefficient ways. Insane stupidity. But they are the elected officials, so I have to respect it.
Honest truth few of us have a clue how 95% or more of the money is actually spent. And most agencies an increase of 5% or a decrease of 5% in funding would be mostly invisible to us. So we don't go by logic or evidence in supporting increases or cuts, but by party colors.

College of Charleston has the exact same roster for the sand and regular volleyball team. They can use the scholarships without having to spend it on two separate sports.

I respect them. I just disagree with them. But what I said is pure and objective truth. So whine and moan about whatever it is you are whining and moaning about....doesn't matter, the party of small fed gobernment is in charge and they want to gut federal spending that doesn't have to do with war and war machines. And college sports is not war so....
Just the truth.
