The list of Pitino replacements started in earnest a couple of different time in the fan base, first surrounding the extortion scandal, and last, around the Andre McGee stripper scandal.
Fans are all over the place, which you would kinda expect.
You have the
Brad Stevens disciples, but I think this has cooled somewhat, given his success with the Celtics.
I'd say that the leader with the fans would be
Billy Donovan, thinking that the NBA will spit him out about the time Pitino wants to hang it up. The Durant move to Golden State may expedite this some, but time will tell. Kentucky fans probably also see BD as a successor to Calipari, as well as Arizona's Sean Miller.
Local sportswriters seem to think that Tom Jurich really would pursue
Jay Wright from Villanova, but I don't see that. I think Jay Wright is very comfortable where he is. And that Villanova likes that. And we all know that local sportswriters aren't the best sources for good info many times.
After that, you have guys like
Greg Marshall, Kevin Keatts, Mick Cronin, Shaka Smart, Steve Masiello, Richard Pitino ... and this list could get silly, given Rick Pitino's coaching tree.
I don't think that Louisville fans have to worry too much about "staying in the family". I think Tom Jurich has shown he would go after whoever he thought was the best fit for U of L. Hell --- he hired an ex-UK coach for chrissakes. You can't get more out-of-the-family than that.
