NCSU coaching search - Wolfman - 02-19-2017 04:04 PM

A lot of fans are pining for Archie Miller. I'd be OK with that if he addresses the Ohio State issue (allegedly his "dream job"). If he is going to leave for OSU in 2-3 years I wouldn't waste the time.

The more I see of Will Wade (VCU), the more I like. He doesn't have a ton of experience but he has a decent record and a lot of grit. In one presser he said something like, "I'd rather we dribble the ball to half court and punt it out of bounds. At least we could get our defense set." In the clip below he addresses players not traveling to the game in school gear.

RE: NCSU coaching search - H.U.S.T.L.E. - 02-19-2017 06:37 PM

Obviously NC State can offer Wade a lot more money than VCU, but I'm a little skeptical he'd take the job. He's still so young that he can afford to wait and see what else opens up in the future, especially if it's a blue-blood that comes calling. He may also see that the grass isn't always greener - look no further than Shaka Smart's current situation.

It's tough to call, since NC State clearly has a higher ceiling on a regular basis, but it's not like VCU is hurting for basketball exposure either. I'd be surprised if he took the job, but that's just me looking at the situation from afar and knowing a bit of the inner-workings at VCU (in my hometown of Richmond).

RE: NCSU coaching search - Dr. Isaly von Yinzer - 02-19-2017 09:39 PM

I don't know if Miller would go to NC State but it is his alma mater, so that is definitely something to consider.

As for Ohio State, I doubt that's his dream job as much as it is a job that he realizes is very well-heeled. As such, if they came calling, of course he would listen. There aren't too many coaches in all college basketball that wouldn't at least give the Buckeyes an audience.

I don't know the Miller family personally but I know a few people who do and they look at it differently than you or I might approach it. They don't look at it with any sentimentality whatsoever. It is all business to them and all about who gives them the best chance to win.

Last year, when Pitt had an opening, Archie Miller wouldn't even look at the Panthers. I found that very odd but a newspaper article suggested that there remains some bad blood between the Miller family and the University of Pittsburgh and it goes all the way back to when Sean Miller was playing PG at Pitt.

I'm not sure what the full story is but apparently the Miller family absolutely hates Pitt to the point that when contacted, Archie Miller informed to Pitt officials that he would not even consider leaving Dayton to take that ACC job. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's how we ended up at NC State in the first place – bad blood between his family and his older brother's alma mater. Incidentally, if you were too young to know it, or too old to remember it, Sean Miller was a hell of a college basketball player for Pitt.

Weird, but what can you do? The kid had a chance to come home and coach in the best conference in college basketball and he wouldn't even agree to sit down and talk about it. As I said, maybe there's more to the story?

I have no idea why people keep saying that you cannot win at NC State? That doesn't make any sense to me. Is that program likely to become the equal of Duke and North Carolina? No, that's highly unlikely – but it's also highly unlikely of any school anywhere.

You can absolutely win in Raleigh and there's no doubt about that. However, I think you do need a charismatic coach and a distinctly different playing style than your closest geographic rivals.

State has a huge hurtle to conquer. Although the time may have come for Coach Gottfried and State to go their separate ways, you can not argue with what he accomplished. Should they have done better? Is this season a fluke season? No one will know. Coaches will look at the fact that State fired not one but two coaches who had successful runs. No, they did not win championships but they didn't make State into a bottom feeder either. Those two firings speak volumes.

His last 2 seasons at State they finished 13th and 14th. That is the definition of bottom feeder. Not t mention the talent he had.

Fred Hoiberg is looking more and more like a great college coach (Pitino, Calipari) and less like Brad Stevens or Larry Brown: guys who can transcend into the pro ranks. Anyway, I'd be in touch with Hoiberg's people now if I were the NC State AD. Indiana, LSU, Illinois, Missouri...there will be some tasty job openings to choose from.

RE: NCSU coaching search - Hallcity - 02-21-2017 11:56 AM

Miller's wife may be in favor of a move to Raleigh.

RE: NCSU coaching search - dawgitall - 03-04-2017 10:24 AM

A lot of fans are gravitating to Kevin Keatts at UNC-W. This might just be the guy that can turn the corner for the pack. His teams play defense! He built the program up after Buzz Peterson failed. Worked with Pitino on championship team and was head coach at Hargrave Military for about a decade. Pitino has great things to say about him.

RE: NCSU coaching search - MegaCard - 03-05-2017 07:07 AM

Keatts would be a great hire, but I'm being selfish and want Keatts to go to another program outside of the ACC. It would be great for the ACC and State.

I'm hoping he gets a gig at an A-10, Missouri Valley, AAC-type school and gravitate towards Louisville once Rick retires.

RE: NCSU coaching search - Wolfman - 03-05-2017 09:20 AM

Keatts is certainly making waves at UNCW. I would not say no but, I wish he had a bit more HC experience.

RE: NCSU coaching search - Ewglenn - 03-06-2017 11:09 PM

What if they made an offer to Richard Pitino. Get to play his dad on a regular basis. Thoughts? I know it's unlikely but something to talk about.

NCSU coaching search - Lenvillecards - 03-06-2017 11:51 PM

What about Cooley at Providence?

RE: NCSU coaching search - Wolfman - 03-07-2017 07:34 AM

Richard Pitino would be interesting. I'm thinking he is 1 or 2 on the list to replace his father at Louisville.

Cooley is interesting. He has experience playing in a tough league.

The list of Pitino replacements started in earnest a couple of different time in the fan base, first surrounding the extortion scandal, and last, around the Andre McGee stripper scandal.

Fans are all over the place, which you would kinda expect.

You have the Brad Stevens disciples, but I think this has cooled somewhat, given his success with the Celtics.

I'd say that the leader with the fans would be Billy Donovan, thinking that the NBA will spit him out about the time Pitino wants to hang it up. The Durant move to Golden State may expedite this some, but time will tell. Kentucky fans probably also see BD as a successor to Calipari, as well as Arizona's Sean Miller.

Local sportswriters seem to think that Tom Jurich really would pursue Jay Wright from Villanova, but I don't see that. I think Jay Wright is very comfortable where he is. And that Villanova likes that. And we all know that local sportswriters aren't the best sources for good info many times.

After that, you have guys like Greg Marshall, Kevin Keatts, Mick Cronin, Shaka Smart, Steve Masiello, Richard Pitino ... and this list could get silly, given Rick Pitino's coaching tree.

I don't think that Louisville fans have to worry too much about "staying in the family". I think Tom Jurich has shown he would go after whoever he thought was the best fit for U of L. Hell --- he hired an ex-UK coach for chrissakes. You can't get more out-of-the-family than that.

That's more like a mixed marriage.

Maybe the wuffies can't find anyone that wants to come to Rawlee.

SO it's like every other coaching search at NCSU?
