Will the Clippers join the Rams and Chargers in Inglewood?
http://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/l...story.html
Quote:Representatives of Steve Ballmer and Stan Kroenke, two of the richest owners in professional sports, have had multiple discussions about the Clippers joining the Rams and Chargers in the sports and entertainment district Kroenke is building in Inglewood.
Five people with knowledge of the conversations told The Times the arena could either be on the 298-acre site or an adjacent parcel. Either way, an arena would drive traffic to the planned mixed-use development and share parking with the $2.6-billion football stadium scheduled to open in 2019.

I don't know what to say about that. LA is truly big.

Getting out from under the Lakers' shadow would be a savvy move for the Clippers. It was generally accepted that Sterling's decision to join the Lakers at Staples Center was an ego play and not necessarily the best move for the team. It's interesting though, that the new arena might be on the existing site. Would an arena with only one basketball tenant make as much money as, say, a commercial or retail development?
OK; just read the article. It makes a lot of sense that Ballmer is shopping for a new home although I still have a lot of questions about Inglewood. The most obvious answer is knock down the Forum and build the new facility. But apparently the Forum is "protected". So we'd end up with three event venues within a stone's throw of one another? It'll be interesting to see how this plays out...

As I always say, move to Orange County.

The drawings Kroenke released for the site include a "6,000-seat performing arts venue" next to the stadium. (Labeled "venue" on this drawing.)
If that "venue" is built, it would be in direct competition with the Forum for concerts and only a few hundred meters away from the Forum. Even if the Clippers don't move there, a brand-new performing arts venue will put a squeeze on the Forum's concert promoter.
They can't be considering building both that "venue" and a Clippers arena on the site, can they? Granted they're just talking at this stage, but almost certainly, if a Clippers arena is built there, the new arena would have to be instead of either the performing-arts venue or the Forum.

Keep in mind the Forum is owned by MSG* - I don't think it's going anywhere.
*and they spent a ton of $$$ renovating just a few years ago

I'm surprised it hadn't been torn down years ago. Reminds me of the Astrodome in that regard.

or the Silver Dome where the Detroit Lions and Pistons used to play. Amazed that has not been torn down. It closed in 2006, re-opened in 2010, then closed again in 2013. the roof is gone. it needs to be torn down.

They were supposed to have torn it down last year.

A lot of us thought that was going to happen. A church bought it after everybody moved out. They still had occasional concerts but I don't think it amounted to much. No idea why/how MSG thought they could make it work but they bought it about 5 years ago and immediately sunk a bunch of cash into it. Now, I guess, it's doing ok but I've got to think that KroenkeWorld is making MSG nervous. Can't find a thing about how the Forum is protected though. I wonder if they got Inglewood to agree to some anti-competitive BS...

Could be that they agreed that the Forum can have large-scale concerts and that neither the football stadium nor the "6,000-seat performing arts venue" (or whatever else is built there) will compete for concerts with ticket demands suitable for the Forum's capacity.

Maybe, but the Forum has a half-bowl capacity of about 8000, and full size of 17K. This will be interesting. MSG is no mom-and-pop shop, and Kroenke is a guy used to getting his way. Rock and a hard place...

I'm always a fan of a pro arena having both NBA and NHL, when it can be made to work well.
Any chance they'd move to the Honda Center?

Once upon a time, the Clippers split their time between the Sports Arena and the Pond as the Honda Center used to be called. The Center is kinda dated, so I don't see it as viable other than as a novelty or emergency venue. That said, if the Clippers ever want to come out the Lakers shadow, they should do as the Angels and Ducks did and establish themselves in the OC.

So they can become the Los Angeles Clippers of Anaheim?
Ballmer was willing to pay $2B for the team largely because they are in LA. Orange County just doesn't offer the same value.
Quote:“The Clippers are not going anywhere, ever,” he said. “I will die owning the L.A. Clippers in Los Angeles.”

Clippers played a handful of games there over about 5 years in the 90s. Almost moved there but that was a choice between the (terrible) Sports Arena and the Pond (nee Honda Center). Think about that: he chose a horrific venue over a relatively new and shiny one, simply because it was in LA. And Arte Moreno is now pretending his team plays in Los Angeles because he believes it's value is greater when associated with Los Angeles.
As I stated above, moving out from the Lakers' shadow is a good move but there's basically no chance that a guy who paid $2B for the team is going to destroy the equity in his franchise by moving to Orange County.

Yes, you and I both know the value of LA over OC. It doesn't mean that it would be a bad idea for the Clippers. Just my opinion.

Or would the ducks move into a new arena with the clippers at the site of a demolished forum ?

The Ducks' owner is a longtime Orange County guy, and IIRC he also controls the arena in Anaheim. He isn't going to change the name of the team to "Los Angeles Ducks of Anaheim," and he isn't going to move the team to LA County.
