Depends on what you mean by "bad idea" and "the Clippers." If Ballmer moves the team out of Los Angeles, perception alone will instantly crater the value of his team. And there's basically no way to get it back. So it's definitely a bad idea for him. Will they have good crowds in OC? Sure. Will they sell more merchandise? Doubtful. Will they grow the fanbase? Doubtful again - they'll shift it but for every OC fan they gain they'll probably lose at least one in LA. Will they be able to get as lucrative a TV deal in OC? Nope.

Ballmer wants to get out of Staples to another location in LA. I think that's the smartest move. Maybe he can find some land in the Pasadena/Burbank area. LA county; not far from DTLA. Westside doesn't work because there's no land and if he could find some it would be prohibitively expensive. Maybe South Bay (industrial portion i.e. Carson), where the Chargers and Raiders were looking. Lots of cheaper land, close to LAX. I don't think the Valley works (outside of Burbank) - perception is worse than OC. Maybe further west in the San Gabriel Valley could work - he'd be able to pull from OC a little bit and your Inland Empire. Long Beach? I don't think so.

What perception? They will never be the main team in LA, at least not for a very long time as long as the Lakers are in town. They've blown a good chance to make headway with the Lakers down and them having a championship caliber team. Not even a conference Finals appearance and an embarrassing choke on national TV when they had a chance.

It's not about money, it's about identity. Plus, moving to Anaheim would not surrender the LA market totally. Short term, they may take a hit but long term it would be a good idea. They could always move back to LA later anyways and after a generation of being the team in Orange County.

You've already agreed that value in OC is less than LA! If you move out of LA you are flushing equity and it all boils down to perception. The financial experts who estimated the value of the Dodgers and Clippers, prior to their sales, were off by massive amounts because they underestimated the value of Goodwill, which basically boils down the market's perception of an asset's intangible value. Arte Moreno values LA so much he's pretending his team resides there. Ballmer already said he wouldn't move out of LA.

OC Register Wrote:Ballmer has rejected the suggestion the Clippers might move out of town. After paying $2 billion for the team in 2014, he has insisted that value was largely dependent on the team’s location in Los Angeles.

IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY! This idea of identity? It goes to perception, which goes to value. If they move to Inglewood or Pasadena/Burbank or Carson, they: 1) get out from behind the Lakers shadow, and 2) Get to be in LA without pretending they're in LA and sacrifice little to no value. Move to OC and he cuts the teams value with no way to get it back.

I do think another arena in/near DTLA is a mistake. They need to create *some* distance.

I get it. There's still room for an identity all your own though. It's why the Islanders play on Long Island instead of MSG (Would it be possible? That's got to be the busiest arena in the world).

This is a great example, and it directly contradicts your point above. THE ISLANDERS PLAY IN NEW YORK CITY!

Technically, but they also play on Long Island, which is their identity. And Brooklyn might as well be it's own city, so any team playing in Brooklyn is essentially not playing in NYC.

Your analogy isn't working at all. Brooklyn's a distinct section of the city, but still IN New York. And it's nearly the same population over less than one tenth the area. That's crazy dense - the comparison to OC just doesn't work. But whether you realize it or not, your Brooklyn Nets argument actually supports my point that Burbank/Pasadena or Inglewood or Carson are much better potential locations for the Clippers. They keep the team in LA but are far enough away that they aren't an obvious second fiddle to the Lakers.

Brooklyn is so distinct you can send mail to Brooklyn, NY. I never denied it was in NYC but it certainly is distinct, otherwise the Nets would have rebranded as the New York Nets and given the arguments in this thread, perhaps they should have. Still, the Isles are an LI team through and through though also foolish for not going in with the Nets on making the BC a hockey/basketball/concert venue.

The Clips OTOH are a reject from two previous cities that came to leach off the LA market. They've made money but also are buried in the headlines and draw apathy from LA sports fans even when winning. A move down the road wouldn't be the worst and there are numerous ways to remain very visible in LA.

No idea what this is supposed to mean, and you never explained what you meant earlier when saying it wouldn't be a "bad idea" to move to OC. Do you at least understand why Ballmer won't move to OC? Do you think he's wrong to think that way? And if you think he is wrong, do you have anything to support an assertion that moving out of LA would NOT decrease his franchise's value?

Yes, I know it's technically $ on paper but long term, I think OC would be better. I've said it before that they'd gain more fans in the long term by playing in Anaheim. Heck, they could still train and have their HQ in LA and keep a close contact with LA via media and events.

It's not always about literal $ on paper. Often times franchise values are just hypothetical anyways.
