More of having a primary process where only the insane vote
I support open primaries, and actually support ranked-choice voting as well. I think those things, especially in tandem, would greatly incentivize campaigns to ignore the fringes and seek the middle, and would also greatly weaken the partisan donor/consultant/media empires that currently control so much of the D. and the R. machinery around the country.
But at the same time, the primary
process we have now is not really that different from what it was 50, 75, 100 years ago. Something else has changed to produce the kind of dysfunctional situation we have now. And sure, there’s a lot of pieces to that puzzle, but yes, one of them is kids being indoctrinated K-12, or even into college for about half of them. That just wasn’t the case in 1940, ’60, or ’80.
Life-experience will knock some sense into some (not enough!) of them. But basically all of them start out belligerent, stupid, and useless from a conservative POV. Their votes count just as much as the votes of people who served in the military, started their own business, raised a family, etc.
