Which NFL teams are "institutions"?
Basically, these are NFL teams you would never consider moving.

My thread was inspired by this post in the Cleveland Browns domed stadium thread on the college football realignment board:

Whether public financing should be involved in any stadium deal is a completely fair debate. However, putting aside of who should pay for a stadium, if I’m realistically putting myself in the shoes of an NFL owner and wanted to build a new stadium in a Northern climate, it would 100% need to be a dome that can host events all year. The Bills have an owner that seems to have a true emotional attachment to the Buffalo area, so they’ll have a new outdoor stadium, but he’s essentially choosing to leave money on the table there. Any other owner in the North in today’s world would realistically want an indoor venue. So, the City of Cleveland proposal isn’t going to work unless they figure out a brand new dome proposal. The City

The NFL isn't going to let the Browns move again (outside the area). The Packers, Bears, Lions, Giants and Browns are institutions. They aren't moving. So the owner doesn't have the same leverage he would have in Jacksonville or Charlotte.

RE: Which NFL teams are "institutions"?
I was recently thinking about something similar. If the NFL contracted, what teams would be chopped first and at what point would it feel like the league was losing its identity? I got all the way down to 28 from 32 and felt that was about it. I’d cut Carolina, Jacksonville, Tennessee, and the Los Angeles Chargers. I’d shift Seattle back to the AFC.

AFC
East: Baltimore, Buffalo, Houston, Miami, New England, New York, Pittsburgh
West: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Seattle

NFC
East: Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington
West: Arizona, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Francisco

This alignment keep the divisions mostly geographically similar with teams in states not bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the West and teams in states bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the East.

I'd keep the Chargers and drop the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are the oldest franchise in the league. If I had a Top 10, they’d make it

Completely eliminating the AFCN is a gawd awful idea. These teams have played together for 50+ years.

Meh, alignment doesn’t bother me as much as retaining particular individual franchises. It’s impossible to break apart any division with breaking up at least 22 years of history which isn’t something to sneeze at.
