Corruption in the U.S.
I'm taking a company-mandated training course re: anti-bribery and corruption.

Transparency.org maintains the annual Corruption Perceptions Index for 180 countries. The scale is 1 to 100 with 1 being the most corrupt and 100 being the least.

Some factors related to corruption perceptions:
  • Poor or no anti-bribery legislation.
  • Failure of local government, media, the local business community, or society at large to promote transparent procurement and investment policies.

Interesting to see where the U.S. lands on that index.

For 2023 the U.S. ranks 24th globally with an index score of 69. 19 spots above middle-of-the-road and 31 spots from squeaky-clean.

I'm just glad our politicians are able to greatly increase their net worth while serving We the People.

RE: Corruption in the U.S.
I should think that was self evident. We witness it daily and go about our lives pretending it doesn't impact us all. It does. Is it corruption to spend million upon millions in a city like Memphis on new and rehabbed community centers and libraries located in parts of the city that serve only one demographic while ignoring the potholes along the busiest interstate in the country, ignoring trash all along our roadways, ignoring critical infrastructure improvements we've been promised for years? Is it corruption that drives our city council to throw millions at MATA with no improvements and a loss of millions (hmmm, wonder whose pockets a big chunk of that money ended up in) and then request millions more from the feds to continue supporting a bus service that maybe 1% of Memphians use? Is it corruption that drives that same city council to fast track the purchase of the hotel next to our multi-million dollar convention center that is severely under utilized because no one really wants to come to a crime plagued city like Memphis?

Our new mayor is young, energetic and full of shite. I have to suffer through daily emails from him telling us how great Memphis is and can become, how we need to do this and we need to do that while never actually doing anything for the entire city. Same as it ever was.

I saw a video about Detroit made in the early 60s. It looked like an incredible place.

And then to see it today.

To go from what it was to what it is... everyone can guess what happened.

Democrats.

Government (at all levels) is nothing more than big business.
