RE: Dock Workers Strike
Ports of Los Angeles and San Pedro are across the street from each other. The container crane operators at both used to have (and probably still do have) contracts that paid them 8 hours (at an exorbitant rate) for working 4 hours. And they were employed by both. So you went into San Pedro at 8, worked until noon, then across to Los Angeles to work until 4, and got paid for 16 hours.

But they were worth th money. A good container crane operator could do the work of a whole gang of longshoremen.

If this strike lasts long, you'll find out what foods with American company labels are imported from overseas.

I'm for automation if it makes what I buy cost less. Pretty simple.

On a societal level, there are major effects of mass automation. It’s exactly why Trump is revered by so many in former industrialized counties in the Midwest.

I believe there is a balance. We don’t want to be ruled by automation, but we risk of falling behind globally by preventing it completely.

Exactly, and if the Schiff hits the fan there's a lot of valuable labor awaiting a national calamity and they wear a soldiers/sailors uniform. That's what they're for, right, national emergencies?

Heck, I'm one of 'em. I wouldn't mind doing that at all. Unfortunately, you need what's called a TWIC card in order to do that. (TWIC means Transportation Worker Identification Credential, for those who were wondering.)

Gimme some money and I will. lol

Yeah, I've been meaning to for quite some time now. Things, unfortunately, have been conspiring against me. I do plan on getting one by the end of the year.

…..and it’s not. Are there high volume, repetitive welds that can be done robotically - yep. But thinking there isn’t still a need for skilled welders is foolish…

With what prices are for everything in Commiefornia you'll have to live in your car. Hey, maybe that's why those people need the raise, just to survive there.

Drove to town after work to pick up some things. I dunno if I’ve ever seen that many people there on a weekday. Almost all of them had TP in their carts too. I thought “what the hell” and got some myself.
