Google omits Trump assassination attempt from a key feature
Quote:A key Google feature is failing to show results for the attempted assassination of Donald Trump — drawing claims from the former president’s son that Big Tech companies are trying to influence the election.
Google users were surprised to discover that the search engine’s “Autocomplete” was apparently omitting suggested results related to the assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
The anomaly quickly caught the attention of social media users, including a Texas congressman and Donald Trump Jr., who began sharing screenshots of their own examples showing Google search suggestions coming up empty for queries about the deadly Pennsylvania rally shooting.
There’s no mention of Trump even when the entire search term “the assassination attempt of” is typed into the Google homepage search bar.
The Post performed a series of test Google searches with the last names of US presidents who were killed or faced attempts on their lives followed by the letters “assassi” to see what autocomplete suggested, including John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Teddy Roosevelt.
In each instance, a helpful list of recommended search terms related to the attempts on their lives sprang into view.
However, when Trump’s name was used Autocomplete offered no suggestions whatsoever.
Even the keywords “Trump assassination attempt” yielded no additional terms from Google.
Google’s search results still point to news articles about the July 13 shooting.
A Google spokesperson told The Post that there was no “manual action taken on these predictions,” and that its systems include “protections” against Autocomplete predictions “associated with political violence.”

Trump bloodied and surrounded by secret service agents.

Google’s search results still point to news articles about the July 13 shooting.
A Google spokesperson told The Post that there was no “manual action taken on these predictions,” and that its systems include “protections” against Autocomplete predictions “associated with political violence.”
“We’re working on improvements to ensure our systems are more up to date. Of course, Autocomplete is just a tool to help people save time, and they can still search for anything they want to. Following this terrible act, people turned to Google to find high quality information– we connected them with helpful results, and will continue to do so,” the spokesperson said.
Once word of the oddity spread, it caught the attention of thousands of users who were able to recreate the phenomenon on their own, including Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy, who wrote “Can verify” alongside a screenshot of his own attempted search.
![[Image: google-search-assassination-attempt-8627...;strip=all]](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/07/google-search-assassination-attempt-86273522.jpg?resize=1024,968&quality=75&strip=all)
Trump Jr. also shared an X post featuring a screenshot of Autocomplete results, which he called “intentional election interference” by the search giant.
“Big Tech is trying to interfere in the election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris. We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable,” he wrote to his 11.7 million followers.
The Post also performed searches for “Biden assassination attempt,” both partial and in full, which it should be noted also yielded no Autocorrect suggestions.
Although it’s not widely considered an assassination attempt, Sai Varshith Kandula, an alleged neo-Nazi, rammed a rented U-Haul truck into White House security barriers in May, 2023, said his goal was to “Kill the president If that’s what I have to do.”

RE: Google omits Trump assassination attempt from a key feature
How do Insert a screenshot?
I tried this on Google just now and this is crazy.
I typed in "assassination attempt on trum"
the only two things that came up were:
assassination attempt on truman
and
assassination attempt on president truman
The letters in bold are what google added to my search as I was typing in letters - WTAF?

RE: Google omits Trump assassination attempt from a key feature
I just tried this now on my iphone. When typing in assassination attempt, it does indeed not include donald trump for an autofill. However, when I leave the search as "assassination attempt" and hit search - Donald Trump is at the top of the page along with a myriad of news stories and also stories by Fox and others stating how Google is suppressing this info. If Google is truly trying to suppress the info then they are doing a MAJORILY AWFUL job with their search engine.
IMHO, clickbait porn offered to us by right wing media sites.

Even DuckDuckGo doesn't put Trump at the top of the list for autofill. When I type in just "assassination attempt" - Trump not mentioned at all. When I type in "assassination attempt of" Trump is the 6th option in the list and it's not Donald Trump but completes as "Assassination attempt of Trump wiki". WTF does that mean?

Ummmm you obviously don't understand how algos work in this space.
What is returned in the search is what people select most often when performing, you know, a search.
The only way to omit things is to write that into the algo code to PURPOSEFULLY not return those results.
This is 100% manipulation, not click bait porn

Explain the manipulation per the story. My understanding is the google search engine was not providing an autofill option to complete the phrase "assassination attempt of ___________" with Donald Trump. Despite the autofill option not being available, if you type in Donald Trump to complete the phrase or even search just the phrase "assassination attempt" and leave it at that - there is pleny of Donald Trump stories regarding the attempted assassination.
Seriously, what am I missing? Assuming Google has modified the search engine to avoid autofilling with Donald Trump whenever "assassination attempt of" is typed in at the start of the search string - just add the few extra keystrokes like "T-R-U-M-P" and it's there. Also it shows up with the shortened phrase.
What's the story then? We're too stupid to search for info unaided? That if the info we want is not automatically filled in that we're helpless to "figure it out"?
If we're talking outright suppression of info then absolutely we're being manipulated and lied to. However, if the suppression is nothing more than failing to see the search you want be an autofill option then I do not understand what the problem is. Seriously, I don't and would love to hear why this is a huge deal.

Google doesnt even want you to know Trump was president. But I guess we had a President Donald Duck and Donald Regan. Who knew?
Google hopes that if you go ahead and type the whole Trump assassination attempt into the search bar, that you really meant you were looking for fashion info on Reagan.

The subsequent post has actual screenshots of what they are doing.
Just like the ultimate search results, the suggested autofill search options / suggestions are part of the algorithm. They are there for a reason.
Easy visibility and selection by the user in the UI.
It's manipulation by the search engine, period.

Yeah---I tried it too. Nothing. I spelled it all the way out to "Tru" and thought the whole sentence would FINALLY appear in the window below when I entered an "m". Nope. In fact, even when I spelled out the entire name "Trump" nothing appeared in the window beneath my search. That said, the actual search DID at least yield real on topic results, but its crazy how obviously biased Big Tech has become.

I just checked “assassination attempt” on Google. Looks like they got it fixed. Donald Trump is #5 now. Between Slovakia and Bob Marley.
Facebook gets caught censoring an iconic picture of Trump and immediately stops.
Google gets caught leaving Trump’s assassination out of searches and fixes it.
What is going on?

It may be time to bring some of these tech executives up on subversion charges. Make them defend in court what they are doing. If found guilty, strip them of their companies and exile them to some other country. The Soros’ and the like are actively trying to destroy our country. It’s time to call them out.
Is this a weaponization of the courts? I don’t think so. The inciting of revolution is a jailable offense according to our liberal friends.

They got embarrassed by Elon. Not really but maybe they don’t have the direction they were getting 4 years ago. Nobody is in their offices telling them what to do.
The penalties will be severe if DJT makes it to the Oval Office and the deep state knows it.

Looks like a DEMOCRAT Senator is going to look into Google.
If the Democrats are investigating, Google must not be censoring enough
