WaPo Columnist's Spouse Indicted for Spying
Quote:NEW YORK, July 16 (Reuters) - A foreign policy specialist who once worked for the CIA and on the White House National Security Council (NSC) has been indicted on U.S. charges she worked as an unregistered agent of South Korea's government in exchange for luxury goods and other gifts.

Sue Mi Terry advocated South Korean policy positions, disclosed non-public U.S. government information to South Korean intelligence officers, and facilitated access for South Korean government officials to their U.S. counterparts, according to an indictment made public on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.

In return, the South Korean intelligence officers allegedly provided Terry with Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton handbags, a Dolce & Gabbana coat, dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants, and more than $37,000 in "covert" funding for a public policy program on Korean affairs that she ran.

There's a joke in here somewhere. I just can't find it.

Yes, I'm being "obtuse" on purpose.

At least she was spying for an “ally” lol. That basically means it’s OK.

She was former CIA, which means yet another black eye on the intelligence agencies.

And as of this morning, WaPo had failed to take down or even footnote Max Boot's articles that this happened.

A major strategic fail of this country is the lack of foreign language acquisition.

We end up recruiting foreign nationals and new citizens because of their language skills because we don’t have many options.

Keeping people from becoming spies is already hard because the people who recruit them are very good at doing so. Keeping non American born people from turning is even harder.

We can buy foreigners to come and work for us, but buying loyalty from people we already know have financial motivations is almost impossible.

Not sure how much outrage to really have with this one. Obviously she needs to be prosecuted for the laws she broke. OTOH, the agencies who engage in clandestine ops do so with allies and enemies alike. How many times of NATO countries engaged fellow allies to spy on their own citizens due to their native countries laws or sensitivity to being caught if those laws don't exist?

The world of foreign policy and intelligence seems to operate with different values than those of us who are mostly concerned with domestic issues only. That seems to be acceptable behavior amongst all international players.
