SEC
Big 10

ACC
Big 12
Washington State
Oregon State
MW
AAC
UConn
Appalachian State
Liberty
UTEP
Marshall
100 schools.
I’d put the cutoff at:
Big 10
SEC
Big 12
ACC
South Bend Catholic
MWC
AAC
Wash St
Ore St
UConn
This sounds about right, but if you add up the schools, it's 97 schools so I think you do need to get 100 as Shizzle suggested. Decided to look up the schools revenues/expenses in the MWC and AAC and see who from the rest of the G5 fits best. I think you could grab 3 schools from this list to get to 100 schools: * = my 3 picks
Liberty - 57 mil
James Madison* - 52
Old Dominion* - 47
Georgia St.* - 45
UMASS - 43
Delaware - 41
FIU - 39
Louisiana
Marshall - 38
Coastal Carolina
MWC: 37-67 mil
AAC: 34-67 mil

RE: The cut off for DI-A (FBS) should have been set higher in 1985
I think North Texas was Independent.
Rutgers was not 1A at the time which means they could not moved up either. Meant no Big 10 for them.
Wichita State, UTA and West Texas A&M were FBS. One dropped to D2 and the other 2 dropped football.
Long Beach State would have stayed if they got the go ahead with the NFL owner to build a big on campus stadium to share.
UCF would not become Big 12 either.
But you can't keep schools down since there are potentials to like UCF, USF, UTSA, Coastal Carolina, Boise State and the likes. There are schools like Tulsa, Liberty, La.-Monroe, South Alabama, Georgia State and Charlotte should not be in FBS. Either small spenders, too small or not enough football history to be up there. ODU did had history before they dropped.
