The Jazz moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City in June 1979 and apparently there wasn't enough time before the 1979-80 season began to get league approval to rename the team. But if they had renamed, what do you think they would have chosen?

Oddly enough, a team that eventually would call New Orleans home, the Hornets, actually had a name that would have worked in Utah—the beehive state.

I always thought it was dumb that they made no effort to rebrand the team. Jazz works as a team name in like 3 places—New Orleans, St Louis, and Memphis.

Speaking of Memphis, the Grizzlies should have picked a new name when they came to town too.

I wonder if they would have selected the Utah Stars after the successful ABA team that had ran just a few years earlier?

Certainly possible. There were the Utah Starzz in the WNBA, and the Jazz affiliate in the G-League is the Salt Lake City Stars.

I like "Utah Stars." The New Orleans Hornets would have certainly rebranded as the "Jazz" when they decided on the "Pelicans."
