Yes, I like to tell my TCU friends that our UTA nursing school is as big as their entire U.

I don’t know about the academic ratings so I can’t comment.

I do know Tarleton is moving forward with a feasibility study for a medical school.

Two of the things I like to compare are Carnegie classifications and endowment (an indication of support).

Here are the SLC and WAC endowments using each conference's respective Wikipedia page.

Abilene Christian....................$773 million
Seattle..................................$241.1 million
Texas Arlington......................$218 million
UIW......................................$175 million
Lamar...................................$161 million*
Houston Christian...................$132 million
Stephen F. Austin...................$128.4 million
California Baptist...................$119.1 million
McNeese...............................$118 million
Texas Rio Grande Valley..........$103.7 million
Utah Valley...........................$84.1 million
Tarleton State.......................$42 million
Texas A&M-Commerce............$32.2 million
Nicholls.................................$30 million
Southern Utah.......................$29.9 million
New Orleans..........................$25.8 million
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi........$24.7 million
Southeastern Louisiana............$22.6 million
Grand Canyon........................$21.6 million
Northwestern State.................$20.8 million
Utah Tech..............................$16.3 million

*Lamar's is tricky. The University has two major endowments. The big one, Lamar University Foundation, has over $130 million. It is not found in some of the NACUBO reports. There may be similar issues with other universities that I am not aware of.

Here are the Carnegie classifications.
Link to Carnegie Classification look up.
Very High Research
New Orleans
Tarleton State
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas - Arlington
Texas - Rio Grande Valley

Doctoral/Professional
Abilene Christian
Grand Canyon
Incarnate Word
Lamar
Seattle
Texas A&M-Commerce

Masters/Larger Programs
California Baptist
Houston Christian
McNeese
Nicholls
Northwestern State
Southeastern Louisiana
Southern Utah
Stephen F. Austin
Utah Valley

Baccalaureate/Diverse Fields
Utah Tech

With regard to your “Very High Research”, I would separate UTA as they are R1 while the other four are R2. I looked up the Texas schools but didn’t look at New Orleans, so I’ll take your word for it.

You are correct about UTA! (corrected in the original post.) I guess I need new glasses. This morning, I got a text from my ophthalmologist that it was time for another check up. No lie. I guess it is time.

Here's a link to New Orleans so that you don't have to look it up.

UNO is in the same group as Tarleton, TAMU-CC, and UTRGV. They have been at the high research level for several years, going back to Carnegie's R1-R4 days.

as a Texas Tier 1 school, I dont equate UTA as a peer to the old UCC/DelMar school with only 6 or 7 PHD level programs and limited on campus facilities, they have a ways to go yet but certainly an asset for corpus christi folks that dont want to go to Kingsville.

It's good for bragging rights, I suppose, to extol our school's academic status and achievements, but I fail to understand relevance to athletics. Are we alleging that our competitors have an advantage in being able to recruit athletes who generally could not pass academic muster at our place? That logic lacks much merit, when one sees the amount and degree of support athletes are given with tutors and scholastic coaching, in order to keep them eligible.

No, I think we will continue to be confronted with the truth that education and big time athletics are two separate enterprises that are artificially conjoined. Each side is tasked to pursue excellence within the rules, and takes pride in and benefits from the other side's successes.

One need only to examine the nexus between athletics and endowment gifts to see the potential benefits the academic side can receive from sports. If only the UTA administration could see this!

RE: Southland Conference
The level of contribution of advanced research by WAC schools is very impressive and something to be proud about. I was really pleased when UTA came aboard. I like the critical environmental and agricultural research at Tarleton. Any time the WAC schools do something it is a tribute to our unity and helps us rise together.

ACU's research is well above the Carnegie level it is listed as. ACU has been critical for our national nuclear physics and engineering world for decades. ACU leads the research team of ACU, UT Austin, Texas A&M, and Georgia Tech in building the first generation four Advanced Nuclear Research Reactor and has six times the funding of any of the team universities on the project. It is the host University for the reactor. ACU research has been critical to the Large Hadron Collider at Brookhaven, the deep Neutrino project at Fermi Lab, and measuring the fission cross sections at Los Alamos and other DOE projects. I am very proud of the WAC schools' contributions in research, it is a conference of rising universities. ACU's ex-students have won many international awards in Engineering and Physics, including the Einstein Prize and leadership in the optics of the JWST space telescope, the single atom laser, etc. These things bring honor to the WAC. BTW, our endowment is larger than that reported above.

Check out the link below for an on-campus project of international implications. The first news article indicates by September 30th there will be an announcement of huge national and international importance. It is from the business partner for the nuclear research reactor being built in the ACU NEXT Lab on campus. Enjoy:

I have a ton of respect for ACU. It's a top-notch private institution for teaching and research. (TCU, another private school in the area, can't touch ACU's research.) I look forward to visiting the campus for an upcoming basketball game. The online pics make it look fantastic.

I say nearly the same for Tarleton. It's definitely an up-and-comer. Chancellor Sharpe, I think, deserves credit for supporting Tarleton's rise in the world. It's neat our campuses had such a burning rivalry in the early part of the 20th century. A lot of lore associated with that.

Side note, our (UTA) endowment has grown a lot, but is effectively understated. UTA gets allocations every year from PUF for STARS (elite faculty recruitment and retention) and about $2 million (currently) every year for students from low-income homes. And, this does not include buildings. For instance, around $40 million of PUF is going to the expansion and renovation of the Life Sciences Building which is underway right now. To get an effective number, one would have to add a certain number from PUF, of which UTA gets a sliver. Of course, you can't really, because the regents control this directly, and the number would vary from year-to-year. But, it's there.

BTW, UTA brag here. UTA just hired its 6th national academy member. This is an important metric. Many schools will never sniff one.

National Academy members bring much fame to a University. Well done UTA. What fields are they in?
P.S. Some of my ex-students have been selected but not me. It is rarified air.

UTRGV had one. She just announced she's leaving for Rice. Seems to fit our trend in sports.

They are spread among the College of Engineering, College of Science, and College of Nursing and Health Innovation
