It seems to me that, if the SEC and Big Ten split off, the remainder schools would retain NCAA Div I branding along with its associated championships. Perhaps the football championship playoff will finally resemble those in the lower divisions. It will be interesting to see if the NCAA would allow SEC/Big Ten Olympic sports to participate in the NCAA championships.

I just hope if/when the breakaway occurs we all hold strong and don’t give them anything for the basketball tournament. Let them play an SEC/Big Ten basketball tournament. Taking away the small schools kills what makes March madness fun.

Would a G 5 league be any different? It seems to me that creating a new brand, building and supporting a league administration and supporting infrastructure will require a pile of cash.

Me too. However, I suspect that there will be a well financed “National Invitational” that includes the top ranked non - SEC/Big Ten schools. The money and exposure will be too much to resist.

I well planned G5 that grows to include the half of the power leagues about to be cut out might attract significant investment.

Even with a few former ACC, PAC, and Big 12 names, being separated from the expanded P2 and becoming G5 (G6?), this will result in a damage to college sports branding that I'm not sure is recoverable. The difference between the P2 and the non-P2 will expand and the perception will be similar to how we see FCS schools. This will be catastrophic for attendance and media money. I suspect many programs will just drop to lower division. Prepare for the possibility, sure, but the presidents and conference admins should be trying to avoid this as much as possible.
I think there will be initial damage to the expanded P2 programs, but they will take the short term hit for longer-term monopoly.
