Girls won the SoCon tournament. Guys start their defense tomorrow (or "today" for those of you who've gone to bed early ) - from Greensboro, GA.

I'm having *severe* internet/modem issues, tho, so my updates and/or reportage may well be hampered. Will do the best I can...........

Chatt and Woofers playing some golf today - along with your Buccaneers. Refer to the previous links for the current situation(s). Woofers are likely already too far back, however, to mount a challenge. Likely us or Chatt for the win, with us still 8 clear of Mocs; Sparty only a very remote chance of a giant comeback.

[update: Mocs charging HARD. Only 3 back down the stretch.]

Chatt-town went low today, going -14. (Buccos were -13 yesterday.) They had 3 guys in the 60s, with John Houk scorching it with a 65. Mats Ege (our guy) also went 65 (including FIVE birds on just the back nine, and no bogeys), but no other Bucs were below 70. Chatt threw in 3 eagles on the day, to 0 for the good guys - which was part of their push.
Sorry I don't have time to do much analysis, updating, etc....

We are starting the day up 4 shots. Hope we pull it out but no doubt will be a challenge. Would be nice for the guys to win and get a ring. That said, they are currently ranked #20, and even if they don't get the "W," they should still get a NCAA regional bid. It just might not be the location they would otherwise want.

Increased for the moment to an 8/9-stroke margin, but obviously a volatile situation.

[further update!: ETSU re-takes the lead by 1 as both teams are spread out over the last 2 holes.]

[one more update: both teams a bit wobbly towards the end. Maybe pressure involved??? Chatt has thrown down a couple more eagles on the day; ETSU none. Scores on the back nine all over the place for both teams.......]

[last update before final - which I may not be able to do. Gotta go very, very soon: Ege and Houk last 2 players on the course, on 18. Ege birdied 16 and 17, to put Buccos up 2. So...........likely ETSU wins, but FAR from certain.]

Anyway................can anyone else remember if ETSU has ever won *both* tournament championships of *both* tennis and golf? Since wimmens' golf has traditionally been sorta weak, this might be the first time. Not gonna go research it.
Both tennis team? Yes. Multiple times. Both tennis teams *and* golf? Almost certainly, and almost certainly multiple times. But adding in the girls' golf may be a first.

The SoCon has record books readily available on their websites, and the answer is not only has ETSU never done this before, no one in the SoCon has done it before. Only have to go back to 1994, since that's when the SoCon added women's golf.

We have won 3 of the 4 four times in the past: 2014 in the ASUN (men's golf finished 3rd) and 2016 (women's golf finished 3rd), 2021 (women's tennis lost in the final), and 2023 (women's golf finished 4th) in the SoCon. Furman won 3 of the 4 in 1997, 2001, and 2008. No SoCon school outside those two has even done that. This is also the first time anyone has gone back-to-back as champions in 3 of the 4 sports since women's golf became a SoCon sport. Obviously, no one has ever gone back-to-back in all four.

Women are headed to Auburn, along with 2 players from Furman and one from Samford. That's a fair amount of respect for the SoCon to have three individuals qualify.

That said.................in olden days..........(college) tennis scorekeeping used to be different for tournaments. Until sometime in the '80s, or maybe even the '90s, there was a 'points' system in the conference tournament. Which was more precise, but also more convoluted, with meta-effects coming in to play maybe too much. But actually more exciting and riveting. Anyway...............I know the SoCon web site only has the womens' results going back to sometime in the '80s, and there most certainly were conference tournaments well before then. I was at some of those tournaments. But I can't say who won them. Very much in general.............ETSU tended to be "competitive", but maybe not top-level. So yes, while their site has lots of good info, it's incomplete. Other awards listed there are also incomplete. I heard once upon a time that their record-keeping was pretty bad there for awhile. That's just second-hand information, tho.
