association
union
league
treaty
pact
compact
entente
concordat
bloc
confederation
federation
confederacy
coalition
consortium
combine
syndicate
affiliation
partnership
fraternity
brotherhood
sorority
team
ring
society
club
guild
group

"Syndicate" does have a nice ring to it....

The joinder of the two conferences can be called "The American Sports Syndicate".

Sort of has a nice mobster ring to it.

"United" is taken.

How about "Group" as in "American Collegiate Sports Group" ??

No? That doesn't "sing"? I am out of ideas.

Seriously, i think this union of the two conferences is for the best, for them and for the rest of college athletics.

Completely separate them from the rest, with no games in any sport between them. I think that would be best for everyone involved.

We'll only consider it if our Catholic Priests from South Bend Bless this Union and join us.

Hell would freeze over first.

Amen and amen.

Are we talking Dante here? Part of his Hell was already frozen over. Perhaps Virgil will guide you through it and into Purgatory!

I think they would both stand to make more money if, in football, they pulled out of the CFP-12 and each played their own 6 or 7 team championship brackets in December, crowned champions at the Rose and Sugar Bowls, and then had their champs meet at a neutral site on a Monday in January.

In Basketball, they could steal the thunder from the NCAA tournament and the other league’s conference tournaments by hosting their massive, combined tournament during the two weeks that conference tournaments are played. Winning that crown ought to be seen as of similar prestige as the NCAA event. Mind you, the Big 10 and SEC teams could still turn around and play in the NCAA tournament too and as their event gains momentum possibly gradually phase out of the NCAA’s bracket.

That word "Alliance" is not exactly bringing feelings of trust. And I wouldn't use that loaded term "Union" either. Perhaps what we need is the collegiality of a Confederation.

Seriously, the Big 10 and SEC will be cooperating a lot more than they won't be and that will mirror FOX and ESPN. All four have plenty to make from the CFP, Tourney, and regular season.

So does having their own football postseason and emphasizing their own basketball event seem like a logical and lucrative path for them?

Yes, with invitations also extended to the Big 12 and ACC for football and to those and a couple of all star mid major hoops conferences for the tourney. Baseball and Softball can be operated the same way or they can just expand the initiations to the best teams at whatever level within the FBS and FCS. No NCAA needed.
