Since I actually hate golf, someone please explain to me why teams start at the 10th hole? Do they go to 18 then start back and go 1-9?

Yes, split tee starts allow a more efficient round from time persepecitve. So those that start on 10, play 1-9 as their back 9.

Played a few shotgun tournaments during my college days as well.

Loved those 36 hole days. We got paired with JMU quite often back in the day.
