Cullop doesn't have a number or jersey to hang from the rafters in Savage. the court is already Bob Nichols Court but there should be some way to commemorate her great career at Toledo.

Why? Mark Ehlen was here for 13 years and had 4 ncaa tournament appearances with a 2nd round game. Cullop had 2 appearances in 16 years?

Here we go....

So Ehlen and Cullop both deserve some form of commemoration

I assume that RF is just trying to generate an argument maybe? but people who aren't as familiar may want to understand the difference between Ehlen and Cullop's history.

Ehlen was a decent enough coach, and he did fantastic with the roster Fennelly gifted him. But his record without a player named Kim Knuth on the team is barely over .500 and he finished with 5 straight losing seasons. Attendance fell by half in his tenure from 1800-2000 when he started, to just over 1000 when he left.

Cullop won 100+ more games than he did, quadrupled attendance to more than 4000 and and significantly raised the standing of Toledo in the national WBB circles.

I know very little about Coach Ehlen which may say all that needs to be said. Tricia Cullop is the reason the women’s program has the fanatical following it does. I suspect a poll of the attendees at any game would show a 90%+ vote in favor of Cullop getting recognition before Ehlen. That is no knock on Ehlen, he had some very successful years, but Cullop was everywhere! Her link to the community was what drove the program, even more so than her coaching successes. And there was no Campbell-style leaving. She finished her Toledo-era and departed with the same class she brought to everything else she did here.

I agree that Cullop had a far greater impact on Toledo basketball because she was loved, respected and embraced by the fan base. I certainly will miss her as Toledo’s coach

But let’s be honest, in D1,basketball coaches are judged by wins and ncaa tournament appearances in the public eye. So, while Cullop was successful in both, perhaps she fell a little short during her tenure here at Toledo. Counting the WNIT title and ncaa appearances, she had 3 great seasons in 16 years. While impressive, given Toledo’s status as the best program in the MAC, I would’ve expected a bit more. That is my opinion. You may disagree.

If Toledo wants to build her a statue inside Savage, hang a banner, or put a mural somewhere outlining her impact, great. But maybe the new coach can achieve more. I hope so. I think expectations, thanks in part to Ehlen and Cullop can be raised more. We should expect this program to be an ncaa tournament participant every season. I don’t think that’s asking too much being that we are Toledo

Bob Nichols coached 22 years with 3 NCAA tournaments 64% win percentage. Cullop had a winning percentage of 65%.

RE: Tricia Cullop - Rumors
This is how I felt also. I felt the continual NITs were a bit of a floor and not the ceiling. They were underwhelming with the resources and fan support we had to only make 2 NCAAs.

RE: Tricia Cullop - Rumors
Cullop was a huge winner 353-169 at UT. 5 MAC titles, 11 postseason tourneys. True only 2 NCAA but an NIT title, lots of P6 wins and should have had 2 other teams selected for the tourney.

More than that she built a program identity, fan base and community connection that last longer than an NCAA berth. Remember, Stan Joplin won regularly at UT but was fired for not energizing the fan base.

One could make a good argument no MAC school has had a better combination of mens/women's hoops over the past 15 years. Still, only 2 total NCAA bids out of a possible 30 which is what you'd expect from a below average MAC basketball school. Ehlen had 5 tourneys in 13 years as many as far better coaches (Fennelly and Cullop) had in their combined 23 years. Sometimes, the MAC tourney breaks right sometimes you struggle there.

RE: Tricia Cullop - Rumors
Folks may or may not find it interesting that in the Cullop years, only 4 schools have won the regular season championship:

Toledo 5
BGSU 5
CMU 4
Ohio 2

But 9 different schools have won the tourney:
Buffalo 3
CMU 3
Toledo 2
BGSU 2
Akron 1
Ball State 1
EMU 1
Kent 1
Ohio 1
Tourney cancelled 1

Only 4 times has the 1 seed (i.e. best team in the regular season) also won the tourney.
Toledo, BGSU, CMU and Ohio each did it once.

So it does seem to show that any team can get hot and win the tourney (or the best team can have one bad game). I understand that many people judge winning the tourney as the sole or major judgement on the success of a season, and that's fine. But it seems clear to me that most of the time, the tourney champ is not the best team. It's hard to win three games in 4 days, even if you are the best team. If the MAC was not a 1-bid league, I don't think folks would be nearly as focused on winning the tourney as a mark of excellence, but that's the state of things. How many P6 teams are considered top teams in their leagues despite not winning their conference tournaments every year, or even very often.

I would argue that Cullop had 3 other teams that deserved to go to the NCAAs, but unfortunately the NCAA wants to keep mid-majors out if they can. But in my mind, overall, her teams were the best in the MAC over that 16 years - not every year, but in general overall.

UB with 3 tournament wins and no conference titles. Did UT win the conference the year UT was blowing out wins with Yolanda and Naama. Was that 2 years after NIT title? 2014 season? I think that was TC’s best overall team. Although last year’s team with a tourney win is hard to argue against. Great research NC!! Love it!

besides a banner-not sure what other of honor UT could, would or should provide her, but something would be nice and appropriate reflecting the huge impact she had while here..

RE: Tricia Cullop - Rumors
I agree north coast in that had the ncaa committee valued “who deserved” over “P5” Cullop probably would have gotten 2-3 more appearances. It’s a shame

My biggest regret as a Toledo women’s basketball fan is the inability of Naama Shafir to showcase her talents in the ncaa tournament. A healthy Naama may have took this program to heights never seen before…

Yes, UT was the #1 seed in the conference tournament in Naama's senior year. The Rockets lost a nail-biter in the semi-final to Crystal Bradford's Central Michigan team.

Yes, UT was the #1 seed in the conference tournament in Naama's senior year. The Rockets lost a nail-biter in the semi-final to Crystal Bradford's Central Michigan team.

In that 2013 season the Rockets were ranked 25th in the AP poll with a week to go in the season. The next week heading into the tourney, they got even more votes, but somehow dropped out of the top 25. Their only losses to that point were to a 28-3 Dayton team, on the road by 3, and to a 21-win CMU team at home, in what I remember as a strange game where UT had something like 25 more shot attempts than CMU. Unfortunately, they lost again to CMU in the semis and their voting went to almost 0 in the polls.

UT beat the only other really good team on their schedule - a 26 win Charlotte team, but the rest of their OOC schedule was weak - but they won them all, mostly by good margins. Still, the NCAA decided that nah, can't have Toledo in the tourney at 27-3. Total shame.

Looks like Cullop's tenure is starting out a little rough as several Miami players have announced for the portal after Cullop's introduction. I think there were 3 players who had announced before the hiring. Now there appear to be 8 in the portal.

She just signed one of the Cavinder twins, which is a pretty big deal because it goes to show how much more money and resources she has at her hands at a money school.

Well, the twins were already at Miami in 22-23. This past season they decided to forgo their 5th years ... or at least one of them did. They other still wanted to play so she announced she would transfer to TCU and play there in 24-25. The other has apparently now changed her mind, and is back at Miami. There is speculation that the one that went to TCU could possibly transfer back to Miami to play with her sister again. Maybe that is just wishful thinking. Crazy either way.

As I recall, Miami's coach at the time got suspended for a few games when they signed the twins ... something to do with a allowing them to meet with a booster when on a visit, or something like that. Funny that I seem to recall Cullop has said some things in the past about not being thrilled about having to negotiate that kind of atmosphere in the new NCAA, but there she is now.

The one twin, I think Haley, didn't even play basketball last season so she could concentrate on social media $$$. She averaged 12 ppg in 2022-23. Her sister averaged 3ppg.

Toledo 5
BGSU 5
CMU 4

Love it!

Thanks for re-cap guys. I loved that team. We were playing unbelievable D that year. Best ever IMHO. Best team TC coached at UT. Maybe best team UT ever had. WE just matched up poorly with CMU and had a few mental yips with them. Take CMU off jersey and results might have been different. Yes - we should have won at home by a good margin. I remember being so frustrated with the L. Maybe we're off track to main track of this post but it's about TC. She'll be under more stress at Miami but maybe putting a winning team on the floor and the effort involved doesn't vary that much from level to level. I don't know as I've never coached.

Well the rumor was true and both twins are now back in Miami. Still a lot of holes to fill in the roster with all the defections to the portal.

new coach provides opportunity-makes one wonder why so many players would attempt to leave (perhaps at end of day most return??)
