NIL money at a big 10 school - basketball
A friend of mine was talking to someone who has claimed that a player who transferred to a big 10 school from a mid major was paid 2 million in NIL money.

Does anybody know with certainty what players are getting paid for basketball at big 10 schools??? I doubt my friends claims are true. The big 10 school is not Indiana.

Obviously depending on the player and depending on the school, I'd say it's plausible.

Teams that I think would pay that:

Michigan
UCLA
USC

Maybe Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon. I'm probably forgetting someone.

A 2 million payout if true would have to be for a rare stand-out player.

Would love to see actual NIL for the full rosters at every P5 school. Guessing plenty of haves and have nots, many students getting zilch or nominal $.

Plausible---we already know that Caitlin Clark's deals total over $3 million.

Bronny James---like he needs the money---is at almost $5 million. (Big Ten, I guess)

Say the name. This isn’t some sort of secret you know. It can be easily researched, verified online since they have to disclose it. It’s not illegal.

Clark and James deals are not through an NIL Collective. Their deals are direct with companies. I think the [poster is referencing more of a collective deal. $2m seems very high coming out of a Collective. They are usually in the 100's of thousands and go deeper in the roster.

Indiana is #1 NIL in the Big Ten. Illinois 2nd and Ohio State 3rd.

I’m guessing the player you’re mentioning is Kelel Ware at IU.

Shannon makes about 700k at Illinois and could push to a mil with merchandise sales and other endorsements.

Domask got about 300k to transfer from SIU I was told. They are petitioning the NCAA for a 5th year and if he gets it, he’ll get at least 700k to return.

Does the $700k go to Shannon's legal defense fund or is that separate?

My friend would not tell me the name of the player, just that it was not an Indiana player......Given the numbers you all have mentioned, I still say 2M is out of the ball park...More like $300-600k.....for a good player at a top 25 basketball program..

If it's not Ware from Indiana, then I think it's a highly exaggerated story.

Who pays the NIL money? Endorsements from companies? Do the schools pay anything? I wish they got stuck with the bill and then see that money dry up quickly.

Rich donors that pay into the fund.
