'Freshman - allowed to play varsity? the sport as we know it is gone'
Sorry, this board existed since around 2022. I jointed 2004 (twenty years ago).
You (apparently) will find this hard to believe, but most fans did NOT like frosh sitting out their first year in college.
As I remember it some players opted for JUCO and played two instead of sitting one at FBS.
My feel for this board is that most are trying to find the 'middle ground' on these issues.
I just like taking pot shots at the sky is falling tenor that these articles / comments take sometimes

BTW, way back when h.s. seniors often failed to meet NCAA qualifying standards (do any fail these days???) many or most would opt for JUCO (but had to get a degree) and play two instead of sit one and play 3 at FBS (later sit one and then play 4).

Splaining, I just realized I had previously renounced responding to you on this issue going forward…wow, I failed miserably!
Steve, that is really, really excellent point. Whatever happened to academic ineligibility? That is how we got a lot of great players in the past. Theron Wilson for example.

I am incorrigible.
Nah I think you and I agree on a lot of this stuff for the most part and I think our discourse about this has been pretty cool.
The only academic stuff i hear about now is guys NOT being able to transfer to schools with good academics - like UM or UNC.

Our program is in the tank, and the MAC is one of the worst D1 basketball conferences in the country.
Tell me, which isn't accurate?

Both postulations are 100% spot on, Sir.
Our resident "pot shot" poster just seems to want to cherry pick stats and ignore the chaos that has resulted from the portal. Gosh, it is so easy to be the devil's advocate and point out one side of the argument without a solution to the current situation. Comedic, one could say.

You are quite correct. In the middle to late 1990s the MAC was rank around 12 best conference in the country. Now we are in the bottom 20. This started when we hired Barnes and Boone and the rest of conference followed with much the same kind of hires. We used to be the conference that drew from for head coaches. Not anymore. Sad really.
