I'm not sure that Milquetoast Mitch is better than a democrat. His comments prior to the Georgia senate runoffs in 2020 may well have cost republicans the senate. That and Trump whining about cheating probably did cause both seats to swing democrat.

He nay very well have cost republicans additional senate seats in 2022, 2020, 2018, or prior, by holding back republican party senate campaign funds from candidates whom he believed would not support him.

I said before the 2020 election that I would have been happy for Amy McGrath to beat Mitch if republicans held control of the senate. I think the might have been a very possible result if losing to McGrath had caused Mitch to keep his mouth shut.

You might have been fine with Amy but Kentuckians aren't. I would have crawled on my knees through broken glass to vote against McGrath.

RE: McConnell Stepping Down
Mitch not running again is not news to anyone here in Kentucky. If he hadn't agreed to retire, he would have been primaried. Trying to push through that dreadful Ukraine aid bill disguised as a border security bill was the final straw.

Mitch has done some important things. Keeping Garland off the SCOTUS is probably the biggest. It's going to be interesting seeing who will succeed Mitch.

I am still not sure he will finish this term. Thankfully the Kentucky legislature took replacing Senators with remaining years on their terms away from the governor a few years ago.

RE: McConnell Stepping Down
Dear Mitch McConnell: If You Actually Care About Saving America, You Need To Retire Today

Quote:After nearly 40 years of wreaking havoc on the Republican Party and nation, the longest-serving Senate leader in history Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday he’ll retire from GOP leadership — in November.

The news was a long time coming considering the 82-year-old has long held the title of most disliked politician in the country. McConnell’s recent medical snafus and political pushback including an unsuccessful ouster only added to the reasons he should step away from running the Senate GOP.

There’s no doubt McConnell spent decades doing unfathomable damage to his party and his country by continually working with Democrats and overriding his voters’ wishes on the Second Amendment, protecting the unborn, keeping taxpayer dollars from abortion, the border invasion, funding proxy wars, Department of Justice and FBI corruption, and choking conservative campaigns.

[Good Riddance To Mitch McConnell: A List Of GOP Senate Chief’s Worst Blunders In Leadership]

When he wasn’t sacrificing our nation’s security to pine for unfettered funding for a corrupt Eastern European country, he and his wife Elaine Chao were playing the stock market and getting “rich on China.”

Time and time again, McConnell has demonstrated hate for Republican voters and our crumbling country. Not even his modest track record on confirming Republican-nominated judges and justices could save him from the inevitable end.

McConnell said from the Senate floor that his decision to step back is rooted in knowing “when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” something he called “one of life’s most underappreciated talents.” Senate insiders admit, however, that McConnell’s announcement is a last-ditch effort to maintain control of a “cratering” conference gaining momentum to remove him from leadership.

The only way McConnell can even attempt to redeem the mess he created is by retiring today. Unfortunately for Americans, McConnell swore to see his time as Senate minority leader all the way through January 2025, when Senate Republicans’ new leader officially begins his duties.

“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon,” McConnell said. “…I still have enough gas in the tank to thoroughly disappoint my critics, and I intend to do so with all the enthusiasm which they have become accustomed.”

It’s clear from his track record and insistence on staying in leadership until the last minute that McConnell doesn’t care about the country at all. If he did, he wouldn’t be bragging about how well “I know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time” and “I have many faults; misunderstanding politics is not one of them” mere weeks after he tried to sell out the nation to pass Democrats’ amnesty wish list.

Since he joined the Senate in 1985, McConnell has done nothing but misunderstand American politics and disregard how the country feels about the collapse of our country’s most valued principles and norms. That’s why he has to go now, not in November, and certainly not next year.

RE: McConnell Stepping Down
Sen. John Cornyn Throws His Hat Into GOP Leader Race
Quote:Following Senator Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) somewhat surprise announcement Wednesday that he would be stepping down from his leadership role in November, the focus quickly became the obvious: Who would replace him as Minority (or, if all goes well for Republicans in the general election) Majority Leader?

There's been some interesting speculation on that front, including the suggestion by Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that McConnell's replacement be his fellow Kentucky Senator, Rand Paul.

But now, one senator whose name has been part of the conversation has made it official: John Cornyn (R-TX) announced Thursday he is running to replace McConnell as Minority Leader.

In announcing his bid, Cornyn touted his experience and expressed his concerns over the functioning of the Senate.

"I am asking my Republican colleagues to give me the opportunity to succeed Leader McConnell,” Cornyn said in a statement. “Throughout my time I’ve built a track record of listening to colleagues and seeking consensus, while leading the fight to stop bad policies that are harmful to our nation and the conservative cause.”

Cornyn pointed to his work in leadership as whip and atop the Senate GOP campaign arm, as well as his recent stretch outside of leadership.

The Texas Republican added that the Senate is “broken” and that he could play a “major role” in putting it back together.

“From experience, I have learned what works in the Senate and what does not, and I am confident Senate Republicans can restore our institution to the essential role it serves in our constitutional republic,” he said. “We will improve communication, increase transparency, and ensure inclusion of every Member’s expertise and opinion. We will restore the important role of Senate committees and reestablish the regular appropriations process, rather than lurch from one crisis to another.”

Cornyn, of course, is not the only one well-positioned to vie for the position. Two other "Johns" have their names in the mix.

Republicans, for the most part, are looking at the trio of Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) as the leading contenders to take over for the longtime Republican leader, with a possible conservative challenger mixed in.

There's also been mention of Rick Scott (R-FL), who previously challenged McConnell for the role unsuccessfully. Given that McConnell has served in that leadership role (either as Majority or Minority Leader) since 2007, this will be the first open contest for the position in 18 years, so should prove interesting to watch.

My favorite comment I've seen is when somebody wrote that McConnell (D - Ukraine) is stepping down as leader.

BREAKING: Ukraine To Lose Top Republican Senate Seat

Quote:KYIV — President Zelenskyy was devastated today to learn that come November, Senator Mitch McConnell's retirement will deprive Ukraine of owning the top Republican seat in the United States Senate.

"It's a huge blow," said Zelenskyy. "No one has worked harder for the Ukrainian people than Mitch McConnell. Speaking on behalf of myself, Ukrainian soldiers, and the billionaire Ukrainian oligarchy, McConnell will be dearly missed."

After a lengthy career holding Republican party leadership, McConnell announced today that he would step down from that role in November, although he would finish out his Senate term. "The time has come....................... ...........................................................that I must acknowledge that I can no longer perform the functions of a Senator," said McConnell, over the course of about four hours. "So, I will continue being a Senator for only........................................... ............................................................................three more years."

Though Ukraine will still be represented by several senators, losing the potential Senate Majority Leader could have significant ramifications. "The Ukrainian majority in the U.S. Congress is slipping," said Zelenskyy. "We'll be hard-pressed to replace a guy like Mitch McConnell. It takes a special talent to negotiate funding the Ukrainian war effort while cutting all funds to secure your own borders. Still, we've got eight months to go, we'll see how many more billions we can squeeze."

At publishing time, McConnell had reached hour seven in delivering his retirement announcement.
