My understanding is this Russian threat is not really some huge technology break through. Its simply taking an ICBM and parking it in orbit where it could be detonated any time they want to take out our satellites. It should be understood that such a device would not be a selective targeted weapon. If its detonated, it will take out everyone's satellites---and possibly mess up electronics on the ground in certain areas. The concern is that Russia intends to exit the treaty banning nuclear weapons in space.

Yet another reason I think we really should be looking hard at vertical take off and landing autonomous drone systems like the Bell V-247. Its basically a smaller drone version of the V280 proposed replacement for the V22 Osprey. These things are large enough to carry a cruise missile, have a range of over 1,000 miles, and fly more than twice as fast as a helicopter. These autonomous drones can perform recon, search, strike, cargo, AWACs, air-to-air, communication relay node, refueling, and ASW functions. In a world where satellites are gone---having a pair of these on every US Navy vessel would go a long way toward improving the situational awareness of a fleet by providing long range search abilities for every vessel in the Navy in a no satellite environment.
