But id sure like Memphis to get in and make a few more sweet 16 or better runs in the next few years before the power conf schools tell the NCAA to go jump and have their own 68 team postseason tournament. Same as we need Silverfield to get us in that 12 team playoff before the G6 opportunity is phased out. At least just to say we made it.

Once all that happens with the CFP and the basketball tournament it won’t matter who’s our coach, what conf we’re in, etc.

That's the way it looks to be playing out.....If you look at the possibilities of what's coming .....
Big Changes.

You could really tell the ncaa was finished when the Calif state legislature told the ncaa to take a hike. ( The NCAA had sent the Calif Gov an ultimatum, saying it would bar all Calif teams (including fb) from any and all after season bowls and tourneys.. if the legislature approved payment to student athletes.) This was 2019-- 5 years before NIL became fact.

The only reason the NCAA has stuck around this long is because it left the big guys free to break any rules they wanted and kept the other schools down---A win/win for the big boys.

And then the Supreme Court dealt the NCAA a rather fatal blow:
"The NCAA’s defenses crumbled further after a unanimous 2021 Supreme Court decision loosened player compensation restrictions and additional lawsuits argued the NCAA’s business model violates antitrust law."

The NCAA employs over 3000 people btw. It is its own entity --pays lobbyists big money to pass legislation solely in its favor --it wants to live. lol. But this is a pro-labor Congress for the most part, and they ignore the NCAA. Plus the Congress wants to be re-elected. People ain't gonna support a congress person who passes legislation in favor of the ncaa.

a new day is coming...I don't know what it holds for us. Maybe our President Hardgrave is doing something pro-active besides looking for another job. lol. Maybe there's nothing he can do.

I like to think we'll come out better after the shakeup. It's more fun.

That might be true in a bubble. But the truth is MANY teams have taken bad losses this year - more so than any other year. And they have to put 68 teams in the tourney.

Do you really think we are not one of the top 68 teams in the country - looking at the entire season and not just a 1-month period?

You know that isnt how it works at all. There are 32 automatic qualifiers. We can safely say the top 7 conferences of those will always be top 50 teams. But there are at least 20-25 in the field that are not top 68 teams and are only there because they won their conference... some of those conferences are made up of 100% sub 200 RPI teams.

So really its the best 36 teams that didnt win their conference fighting for at large bids. Are we a top 40 team? Maybe and maybe not. Hope we get back to being that

This iteration of the AAC is much better than I had imagined. I was pretty sure we were going to pull a Cal and walk all over the competition straight into a deep run in the tourney. I must have been hallucinating.

It doesn't help that almost every single one of our conference mates, at least this year, has treated a game with Memphis like their lives depended on winning. Teams that perform poorly suddenly spring to another level when they face us. Someone on the opposing team always seems to have record setting nights against us.

Doesn't matter, I'm done. I won't continue investing in this team, either emotionally or financially. If the admin goes out and finds us a legitimate D1 coach with sterling bona-fides maybe my interest will be rekindled.

Keep in mind that I remain a huge Penny fan, just not a Coach Penny fan. And that's a damn shame, I really wanted him to kill it here.

He missed on recruiting with this class. There are fine margins in sports though. Mills getting hurt and the Mikey drama royally f’d this class. This team barely has any legit guards, which has caused significant imbalance and issues on both sides of the court.

.681 is a solid winning percentage and prior to Cal it was a very acceptable result.

1 year is a setback. It doesn't sign Penny's death warrant. He lost this bunch and doesn't seem to be able to get them back. But his past seasons were steady progression. If you really want him to kill it here, then just cheer for him to get back to building the program back up next year.

Before last night I would say definitely top 50. I thought they were on the way back. But this team just isn't coming back.

Being in the AAC is NOT a problem. Losing is the problem. Both Memphis and FAU were in Top 10 at one point. But you can't lose all the time and still be expected to make the tournament. FAU will make it no matter if they when the AAC tournament or not. As we would have done too had we not completely fell apart.

The point is that there is more parity in college bb this year than ever before. The numbers prove it. But we're talking about the MWC getting 6 teams in, while the AAC might only get 1. That's bogus. Doesn't help Memphis this year because, yeah, we keep losing. But the AAC is definitely a problem long term.

ESPN shared an interesting stat for AP Top10 teams on road vs unranked opponents:

In 2021-22 Top10 teams were 55-20 or .733
In 2022-23 Top10 teams were 58-19 or .759
In 2023-24 Top10 teams are 22-27 or .449

https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketba...nding_the/

Running the table in conference is unrealistic regardless of conference. VERY few teams have that expectation placed on them. Conference opponents know each other well. Conference foes gameplan extremely well for each other. They also recruit to compete against each other. Going undefeated or nearly undefeated in conference is a lofty goal. What Cal and the boys did in CUSA was special.

Losing home games to these teams is the issue. Most of these top 10 losses are at home

Every coach has pointed out areas where certain players need to improve, but none have lashed into players with the type of comments we've seen from Penny.

Never has any other coach ever said

"the staff is doing a good job, the players refuse to listen"

Q: Coach what you going to work on in practice this week?
A: Nothing, the players have to correct things.

"Some older players are jealous and trying to sabotage the team."

Can you not comprehend the level of egotistical paranoia that is involve to sit in a post game press conference and actually accuse players of trying to sabotage the team?

Your cult like devotion is frightening.
