What if we go back to the 16 team format?
That would have us making the tournament just 11 times in 72 years.
So we reached the round of 16 every 6.55 years.
The term didnt start until the late 80s until the Pastner/Tubby/Penny eras we went every 4 years and that is the standard we need to get back to. That is why Pastner was chased off, Tubby was fired and now Penny isnt achieving. But even with your 6.55, well this is the year.
Maybe, but too many believe that Sweet 16 is a right of passage for the program.
Kirk and Cal skewed the average for the other coaches.
Kirk 4 times in 6 years and Cal 4 times in 9 years.
Without their input we only made the round of 16 every 19 years.
Maybe that’s because we made a bunch of bad hires?
That is a very likely possibility.
3 or possibly 4 "good hire" in 103 years should give you an idea of the realistic level of the program.
As much as we think of ourselves as a basketball school, we're not on the same historic level of a UCLA, Duke, NC or Kansas.
We're not top 25 in most list of college basketball dynasties.
Some times we have unrealistic expectations.
We're not going to be an annual top 25 and potential sweet 16 program.
We're going to have our runs up toward the top, but just like our short periods of bad teams it is going to average out.
There is a reason why Cal took less money than we offered to go to UK.
