RE: Football Signing Day February 7 2024
Nebraska's not so secret weapon in the 80s and 90s was their walkon program. Scoop up all in-state talent and there's bound to be a few diamonds in the rough. When cost of attendance was low, forgoing the scholarship to be on your childhood dream team wasn't that big of a sacrifice.

Now with NIL, scholarship limits don't mean anything to the bigs. Put the 3rd string OL on scholarship and the 5* qb can be a PWO with $3m NIL. I expect larger rosters moving forward with more analyst types basically running a freshmen/jv program internally. Grab as many as you can then separate the wheat from the chaffe in their redshirt year.

Best info I can find, there is no actual roster limit after classes start. If Michigan wanted to they could have 500 and host an entire walk on intramural league in the Big House on sundays. Now that I think about it, they probably should if only to maintain the alum/student connection to the pro team playing on saturday.

Good post!

In 1973, the limit was 105 scholarships, that is when Bo and Woody recruited players not to play for them, just not play at Wisconsin or Iowa. Hence the Big Two and Little Eight. In 1978 that number dropped to 95 and in 1992 it reached today's level of 85 which obviously leveled the playing field to an even greater degree. Somewhat similar to the NFL salary cap.

NIL, however, as you pointed out has the potential to return NCAA football to the bad old days.

So Nickle pointed out there were 129 players on the roster. He was actually serious. You can count them on the EMU athletics football roster page.

I was shocked, so I checked previous years. It was 114 in 2023 season and in 122 in 2022 season. So not outrageously larger then previous years. I am so surprised by all this.

Also, the Vanzee had a great and insightful post, which may lead to some optimism:

All right, that was my once every couple weeks post on football. You guys have an amazing intellectual capacity to track all this football stuff! Basketball is so simple compared to football. Thanks for doing so, I enjoy reading your posts!!
