Such an old school guy. Reading this article, it really showed how little things added into the bigger picture of creating a lasting culture. These principles really should be engrained in who we are, none of which seems so crazy. But in a world of NIL and transfer culture, I could see how this falls to the wayside.

You want me to go to class? Transfer
You want me to arrive five minutes early? Transfer
Workout for performance? Transfer

Really, you'd be cheating yourself out of some good lessons by passing up on these principles. That's why he was a winner everywhere he went.

The 2010 MACC loss to Miami and his immediate jump to Minny will never be forgotten but other than that….

On another note, can we send the link to Burno. Those tips don’t just apply to one sport.

Kill is the man! Great Coach! Great man to find hidden talent. The players loved him, and he was great at showing student athletes what success was off the field as well.

You guys cry because he left, but do you realize that the guy had cancer, seizures, health risks, etc. He had an opportunity to coach a big 10 school with great facilities and make millions. If he didn't accept with their terms he would have missed that opportunity.

RE: Coach Kill at the AFCA
I read through his standards. He's on target, obviously.

There is one spot TH had a problem with. TH was not able to get a great staff in place off the bat at the start. And that hurt. And Kill said, get it all at the start, cause you can't get it in year three. Hopefully JK is wrong in that and TH can still get it all in place. I know it's not for lack of trying or lack of know-how.

Also look at the strength coach comment. JK probably learned that from Novak here! LOL

RE: Coach Kill at the AFCA
Coach Kill at NIU.

I remember the team he inherited from Novak was coming off an injury prone year. The record did not reflect the talent at NIU. Kill took the team from a good foundation and kept the legacy that Novak left him. I believe he made it better, if not equal to that level.

Kill had the underling health issues that I don't recall him missing much at NIU. I don't blame him for taking the MN job when it was offered. I was disappointed, but he had always left the teams better then when he arrived. His departure, although disappointing, gave us Doren, who pretty much kept the standard and led NIU to the Orange bowl. His departure was also understanding from his point of view, but in my memory was harder to take the Kills.

All in all, we had a very solid run during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Carey was the first coach to not live up to the previous coaches. We went downward during his time and NIU and were lucky to get him out as soon as they could. The jury is still out today, but I do not think we will get back to the success we had as it stands today. Its just my observations on the last few years.

In fairness, the previous coaches I mentioned didn't have to deal with the "portal" issues, but still, I think we are not developing talent we bring in or solid in the assistant coaching area. Especially in the coordinator roles. Play calling has been bad for several years. (Carey on forward) Anyway, that my 2 cents. Have a great day everyone.

RE: Coach Kill at the AFCA
I haven’t posted in a minute but I have to jump in on this and leave you with this. I was under Novak as Kill was coming in. Without a doubt, Novak era was clearly coming to an end as evident by the shotty coordinators and SOME of the position coaches. Kill firmly started what NIU came to be by molding what he already had and recruiting a new system. One of his main strengths was that he had almost an identical coaching staff since he was at Saginaw.

His first year was a tough year for me. I essentially lost a starting role due to injuries that were steadily getting worse. What’s worse, Novak and Ethridge (oline) essentially made an example of me in front of the whole team despite the injury. Only get pulled aside after the fact and told “sorry, we’re trying to make the team accountable”.

Once Kill came in, I was given a poor prognosis if I were to continue playing and he walked me through every step even though I was realistically never going to significantly contribute to the team again. Most importantly, he navigated all of us through the shooting which directly affected several of us. He essentially was the force protecting us from the media.

Regardless of how you feel about his coaching, he was one of my greatest influences as I made my way into my professional life. I was always hold him in very high esteem.

I can only imagine which Huskie legend you are. I was at NIU during that time, and heard great things about Kill. Very appreciative to hear what you had to say from a player's perspective.

If the transfer portal were around back then, do you think you would have transfered and passed up on that learning opportunity?

Lol. Kill has a pretty good formula in transforming a program for the better in a relatively short time but he was oh so close to winning a MACC then left on a jet to Minnesota.
