It is beyond dumb that many are going out of there way to celebrate her as the "winningest" college basketball coach of all time. What she has done is nothing short of amazing and should be celebrated in all basketball circles but comparing her to coach K and men's basketball is silly. It's basically not even the same sport and coaches rarely move between the mens and women's game, even in high school. In addition, the womens game allows for 2 additional scholarships meaning that major programs like Stanford, get to stockpile better players, making the playing field uneven. She is the all time winningest coach in NCAA women's basketball, why cheapen that by trying to make it something it's not? Does it makes sense during a march madness game between Izzo and Self to show the all times win list and intertwine it with women's coaches? Of course not, the whole thing is ridiculous.

I don't believe in comparing the wins of men's and women's hoops coaches, IMO they are two different sports, as "Shox" alludes to above.

Still, reaching 1200 wins is a monstrously awesome achievement. I see by her coaching record that she has been a women's HC since 1978, that is a long, long time ago.

Congratulations to TV!

While I think that Coach K's achievement is far more impressive, I also don't think that it's unreasonable to compare the Ws of mens/womens coaches in the same sport. In baseball I wouldn't compare them b/c the women's version is actually a different sport, but in basketball? They all have the same rules, same time of game, same governing body, fundamentals are the same, etc etc etc. Female coaches have begun filtering into the NBA without a hitch. Why is that? Because they learned the exact same lessons as the men about the fundamentals of basketball. Sure, men can jump higher and run faster, but it's still the same game.

If you want to talk about why they shouldn't be compared, it's better to say that there's far less competition in women's bball, so a W in women's Bball isn't worth as much as a W in men's, and that's a very valid consideration.

Its also easier to get fired in men's basketball.

On a related note, believe it or not, with Saban's retirement, the longest tenured football coach in the SEC is now Bob Stoops at Kentucky.
